Scope and content
Plywood sheathing being applied to the roofing structure at the new Grant school on No. 11th & Prospect. Photo ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. Houses in view are 1101, 1102, 1105 & 1109 No. Prospect St. Grant school was originally constructed in 1900, with a brick addition in 1920. This photograph is probably taken from the 2nd story roof of that addition. Plans for the present school were drawn in 1954 and bids taken. However, there was not enough federal matching money available to build the school. Plans waited while voters approved a bond issue and construction began in 1955. The new concrete and brick faced building contained 20 classrooms, a kitchen, multipurpose room, library, office and boiler room. The original 1900 frame school was removed to make room for the new construction and the 1920 addition was incorporated into the new design. ("For the Record" by Winnifred L. Olsen)
