Scope and content

On February 24, 1940 the Ladies Musical Club of Tacoma combined with the Orpheus Club to present a revival of "The Little Tycoon" by Willard Spencer, the first successful comic opera written by an American composer. The operetta was part of a Gay Nineties program of dances and songs held in the Friendship Hall of the Masonic Temple. Dressed in Japanese costumes are: (l to r) front row, Mrs. Raymond Nelson, Mrs. Andrew Harde, Ruth Hooker, Mrs. R.W. Mathewson and Carla Swanberg; middle row, Gladys Steven, Mrs. Andrew A. Berilla, Bernice Hamilton and Viola Markoff; back row, Blanche Coors, Naomi Callson and Margaret Oldfield. The Ladies Musical Club was entering its 50th year and the Orpheus Club was the oldest men's singing group in the Northwest. (T. Times 2/16/1940, pg. 13-picture, T. Times 2/9/1940, pg. 11)
