Scope and content

The rare wild hyacinths were in bloom in the spring of 1940. Clemens Bauer, 76 years of age, poses with a bunch of them on May 18th in Fireman's Park. The old gentleman wasn't revealing where he found the rare wildflowers though, only that it was in a swamp region near Fife. Mr. Bauer was the proprietor of the Butler Hotel at 824 A St. for 35 years until his death June 1, 1941. He had fled to the US from service in the German Army in 1889. Lured by the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890's, he came to settle in Tacoma in 1901. (T. Times 5/23/1940, pg. 13; T.Times 6/4/1941, pg. 22- death notice)
