Scope and content

On May 20, 1940, Lillian (Mrs. Wilfred) Burrows presented checks to some creative Tacoma students for their prize winning Poppy Posters. The American Legion sponsored the annual poster contest in conjunction with their street sale of poppies, with the proceeds from the sales going to assist disabled veterans and their families. The winners were, left to right, Ray Herness (age 17) from Lincoln High School, Gerrie Lough (15) from Mason Jr. High, and Norman Ryker (13) from Stewart Jr. High. First place winners Herness and Lough received three dollars each. (T.Times 5/22/1940, pg. 13)
