On July 3, 1940, as part of the dedication ceremony and air show at McChord Field, an early model B-17 "Flying Fortress" used three of its engines to manuver on the runway. Appoximately 10,000 visitors swarmed over the U.S. Army's newest airbase to see the $6 million base. In a live radio broadcast from the base, Brigadier General B.K. Yount spoke to the nation of the need for a newer and larger air corps do to the "Chaotic state of affairs throughout the world".
