Scope and content
ca. 1939. Concrete anchor for one of the piers of the first Narrows bridge being dumped, circa 1939. The 550 ton reinforced concrete pier anchors were cast at Scofield's, near the 15th St. Bridge in Tacoma. They measured 12 x 12 x 51ft. 6 inches. They were towed on scows one at a time to be dumped in a 900 foot circle around each pier site. They would be spotted into place by a team on the land, like laying over a target. Sea valves would be opened , flooding the scow to a tilt, the anchor would slide off and the empty scow would right itself. ("Bridging the Narrows" by Joe Gotchy; T.Times 1-31-1939, pg. 1)
