Originally built in 1891 as the Merchants National Bank, the building on the corner of 11th and Pacific Avenue became home to Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan in 1939. When the building was remodeled in 1949 many innovations were added to the venerable structure including Tacoma's first escalator. Both the Pacific First Federal building at 1102-04 Pacific and the Bernice Building next to it were torn down shortly after this photograph was taken in 1961; a new, larger Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association building was built on the site. The new savings and loan had its grand opening in September 1964. Today it is home to Washington Mutual Bank. (Photograph ordered by Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Assn.)

ca. 1961. It must have been a warm spring day in 1961, as convertible tops were down and teens in shorts enjoyed refreshing drinks at the Jack Frost Co. Port-O-Unit drive-in restaurant. The small wooden building, 10 x 30 feet and 8 feet tall, had a flat roof with a jolly rotound figure in clear view. A dollar would have gone a long way to buy fries, hot dogs, hamburgers and cold drinks. Jack Frost Co. was believed to be the first manufacturer of portable drive-in restaurants in the country. These restaurants could be moved easily to any potential business site. All plumbing and wiring were concealed in the walls and flooring; previously drive-ins had expensive plumbing and wiring in the cement floor slab, making removal of the structures an expensive proposition. Photograph ordered by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. (TNT 2-15-61, D-9) TPL-8267

The Queen's float, created by the Department of Public Utilities, was traditionally the first float in the parade and the 1961 Daffodil Parade was no exception. Accompanied by parade marshals, the Daffodil Queen, 17-year-old Carmel Mackin of Puyallup High School, and her six attendants wave gracefully to the spectators lined deep on Pacific Avenue. Sixty thousand daffodils were used on the float which included a spurting fountain. Temperatures in the chilly 50's and gusty winds did not dissuade thousands of parade goers from watching the 28th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Parade. (TNT 4-8-61, p. 1, TNT 4-9-61, p. 1)

Marching proudly past the Greyhound station at 1319 Pacific Avenue are a 25-piece band and separate drill team during the 1961 Daffodil Parade. These young men may have been part of a local R.O.T.C. unit. Spectators by the thousands had lined the streets of downtown Tacoma to view the annual parade. The 28th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Parade featured 31 floats, 25 bands and 37 drill teams among other entrants. The gray, overcast skies and temperatures in the 50's did not seem to hamper either parade participants or watchers. (TNT 4-8-61, p. 1)
