ca. 1979. The Asako Barber Shop, 1552 Market St., circa 1979. The barber shop was owned and operated by Asako Mayeda. According to the City Directory, the barber shop was located in the Lorenz Building, 1552- 56 Market St., built in 1889 and formerly home to the Japanese hotel, the Hiroshimaya Hotel, also known as the Astor House.

ca. 1979. Fun Circus, located in the Luzon Building (1302-04 Pacific Ave.) The building is on the City, State and National Registry, despite being vacant and derelict from 1986-2007.

ca. 1979. Architectural detail on the Garretson-Woodruff-Pratt Building. The structure was built in 1890 and was home to the Peoples Store (1890's) and Sears (1920's), as well as other businesses. Today it is part of the University of Washington's Tacoma campus.

ca. 1979. In 1979, faded portraits of babies graced the space above the entrance at 736 Pacific, formerly the location of Nancy's Baby Portrait Studio. The studio was a branch of Richards Commercial Photography specializing in studio portraits of children. By 1979, that portion of the studio had closed and both 734 & 736 housed Richards Commercial Photography.

ca. 1979. Billboard for Tareyton cigarettes on top of roof of unidentified brick building, circa 1979. The billboard reads "I'd rather light than fight." The slogan is a spin off of Tareyton's hugely popular slogan "Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch," used from 1963-1981. The second slogan was introduced in 1976 for their new product, light cigarettes.

ca. 1979. Sign for one of Tacoma's oldest businesses, L. Schoenfeld & Sons, Inc. Furniture, 1423 Pacific. The furniture store did business for 94 years (1924- 1996) from this location in the Sandburg building. The building was built in 1907 and is on the City Registry.

ca. 1979. Newly constructed Schuster Parkway, formerly Bayside Dr., circa 1979. Schuster Parkway is a 4-lane divided expressway connecting the end of I-705 to the older part of Tacoma. ("Old Town") Bayside Dr. was renamed Schuster Parkway in May of 1975 in honor of former Public Works head Gilbert M. Schuster who had died in June of 1974.

ca. 1979. The ornate outline of the Samson Hotel, 1152-56 Fawcett Ave., shows clearly against a more modern office building in this Cysewski picture from 1979. The hotel is viewed from the intersection of Tacoma Ave. South and 13th Street. The Hotel was built in 1889 from a design by F.A. Sexton and was converted to apartments in 1928. After several fires, the building was demolished in 1989. The site, in 2007, is a vacant lot.

ca. 1979. Swiss Hall, 1902-04 Jefferson Ave., circa 1979. The Swiss Society opened their hall here in 1913. It was designed by Heath & Gove. Since 1993, it has been home to the current Swiss Tavern. The building lies on the outskirts of the University of Washington Tacoma campus.

ca. 1979. Photograph taken in 1979 from the intersection of 15th St. and Fawcett Ave. The duplex in the center of the photograph is the Donald McDonald double house, built 1888, at 1346 Fawcett Ave. The house was later further divided into apartments.

ca. 1979. 1979 photograph of "Veracity" inscription over the door at McCarver School, 2111 So. J St. The school was Tacoma's third intermediate school, opening in 1925. It was part of the plan to arrange Tacoma Public Schools in a 6-3-3 year ratio, representing years in elementary, junior and high schools. The structure was designed by architects Hill & Mock. Elementary classes were added in 1938. In 1968, the School Board discontinued junior high classes at McCarver to facilitate desegregation.
