ca. 1979. Views in 1979 of the 2400 Block of Pacific Ave. On the left is 2401-05 Pacific, home in 1979 to the 24th St. Tavern. The building was constructed in 1927 as a store, designed by Heath, Gove & Bell, architects. On the right is the Hotel Merkle, 2407-09 Pacific. The building was built in 1913 and designed by Darmer & Cutting.

ca. 1979. Albers Mill, circa 1979. Acme Inter City Freight Lines occupied this building from 1978-1982. Prior to that, Inter-City Auto Freight was the main building occupant from 1945-1977. It was originally built in 1903 as a cereal mill with a warehouse added later. The above view, according to a reader, is pointing east between the north side of Albers Mill and the adjacent L-shaped building that was removed a few years before the Glass Museum was constructed.

ca. 1979. The east end of the 11th St. Bridge, now the Murray Morgan Bridge, circa 1979. Dedicated in 1913, the $600,000 steel truss lift-span bridge provides a link between the downtown business district and the industrial Tideflats area. It was renamed for Mr. Morgan, perhaps the Northwest's foremost historian, in 1997.

Commerce Street running behind the West Coast Grocery Co., right, at 1732-38 Pacific Ave. On the left hand side can be seen large buildings located in the 1700 block of Jefferson Ave., left to right 1731-37 Jefferson and 1721-25 Jefferson. The Carlton Hotel, 1552 Jefferson, can be seen in the distance left. This area is now part of the campus of the University of Washington, Tacoma campus.

ca. 1979. The Carlton Hotel, circa 1979. The Carlton was built in 1909 by Anton Huth, from a design by architect C.A. Darmer. The hotel was also home to the Barbary Coast restaurant.

ca. 1979. The Moorehavens Inc. Nursing Homes, circa 1979, at 1748 Jefferson Ave. Also known as the Jefferson House Nursing Home. The structure was built in 1945 as the Jefferson Center War Housing Project. The dormitory was of masonry construction due to the wartime shortage of lumber and was completed shortly before the end of the war. The building has been demolished.

ca. 1979. Side view of the Shaub-Ellison Co. building, 1902 Pacific Ave., from the intersection of 19th and Commerce in 1979. South 19th Street between Pacific and Jefferson was closed to traffic and the 1931 era Art Deco Shaub-Ellison building was demolished in 1995 to make way for the University of Washington - Tacoma Campus. In the background are, left to right, 1908 Pacific- home in 1979 to American Plumbing & Supply Co., now part of the UWT campus; Harmon pedestrian bridge over Commerce St. connected to the Harmon Warehouse, 1949 So. C St.; the light colored Heidelberg Brewing Co., 2120-32 So. C St.; and the Snoqualmie Falls Power Co. Transfer House, now part of UWT campus.

ca. 1979. Back of the Jefferson House Nursing Home, at 1748 Jefferson Ave. The structure was built in 1945 as the Jefferson Center War Housing Project. It was designed by the Tacoma Architects Association with Ernest Mock serving as supervising architect. It was completed just before the end of the war.
