On October 30, 1941, one of the largest crowds to ever see a parade in Tacoma gathered to match a six mile long parade of military might. Pictured is a birds eye view of some of the 3rd Infantry Division of Fort Lewis marching in mass formation.

Every man and vehicle in the U.S. Army's 3rd Division, stationed at Fort Lewis, was on display during the military parade held on October 30th, 1941 in downtown Tacoma. As paper, confetti and streamers rained down, the soldiers and their machines made their way toward the reviewing stand set up at South 12th Street and Pacific. Commercial and academic Tacoma were "closed" for the parade. Most stores shut their doors until after the procession and Tacoma's schools declared a special all-day "holiday". Immediately after the parade, Tacoma's merchants threw open their doors and began the 10th Annual "United Tacoma Sale", sponsored by 50 downtown retailers. (T.Times 10/30/1941 p.1)

On October 30, 1941, jeeps roll down Broadway as part of a massive military parade. On the left they roll past the Roxy Theater, 901 Broadway. On the right are signs for the "Motoramp Garage" (745 Commerce), Acme Cleaners and the Family Medical Center. Sidewalks were packed with parade goers.

Doris E. Wharton and Sgt. Milton G. McAtee of Fort Lewis were married on February 1, 1942 in the loft of the YWCA with Dr. J. Renwick McCullough officiating. The bride, daughter of S.G. Wharton, was a graduate of Clover Park High School. Miss Wharton wore an ivory satin gown, princess style with a sweetheart neckline, and a full length train. Her attendants were dressed similarly and carried small bouquets of flowers. The bride later changed into a blue dress, black fur jacket and blue accessories for her wedding trip. Twenty nine nurses received their diplomas on May 26, 1942, after graduating from the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nurses. These four nurses shown in closeup were very special graduates. Publicity for Community Chest. Among the entertainers at the September 4, 1942, dedication of the new U.S.O. for servicemen of color on Commerce St. was a USA private from New Orleans, George F. Miller. His barefoot style of dancing and upbeat attitude brought large smiles on the faces of his standing room only audience. Seated in a chair on the stage is Pvt. Miller, bare feet lifted high and index fingers pointed as he faces the large crowd. (TNT 9-6-42, A-12)

Publicity for Community Chest. In September, 1942, the newest U.S.O. in Tacoma opened on Commerce St. It was specifically to be used by servicemen of color and was considered to be as attractive a recreational center as any of those then operating in Tacoma. Dedication ceremonies were held on September 4, 1942. The center was packed with young soldiers and their guests; as pictured above, the men wore their dress uniforms and the women, lovely gowns. 44 people attended the R.E. Anderson Company dinner party at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club on July 28, 1939. The company threw the party for their employees to celebrate the company's 50th year in business. Several large displays of flowers are in the foreground. Among those in attendance were Herb Syford, Mrs. R.E. Anderson, Edward Wheeler (Mrs. Anderson's grandson), Selwyn Doherty, and Ruth Anderson Wheeler (Mrs. Anderson's daughter). The R.E. Group at Puget Sound National Bank with Golden Jubilee hats. Men in western wear and women in bonnets. Bank president Reno Odlin is standing wearing dark clothing without a hat to the right of the column, in the center of the group. All employees were required to wear Jubilee garb in celebration of Pioneer Days at Puget Sound Bank. The bankers wore beaver top hats with dignified frock coats and black ties. (T. Miss Pierce County Margaret Franich, runner up for the Golden Jubilee Hostess Queen. The contest for the Hostess Queen was so close, that the girls ruled together. Both girls were sent to compete at the Miss Washington contest. Miss Franich wears a gown with stars on it and rope around the waist with cape and crown.

Golden Jubilee Pageant "Saga of the West." Searchlights from the Battleships of the US Pacific Fleet pierce the night sky over scenery in Stadium Bowl. The stage for the extravaganza was over 200 feet in length. The fleet had arrived on July 20, 1939 with six battleships and 8,000 men. In port were the flagship Pennsylvania, as well as the California, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho and Mississippi. Tours were conducted from 1-4 and searchlight displays each night at 10:15p.m.

Photographers capturing on film the grand champion rooster, a Rhode Island Red, with his winning ribbons at the poultry show. Turner Richards and his crew pose with large format cameras and new camera equipment surrounding the cock. (See D9151-1a for the finished photo.) The 45th annual show, sponsored by the Tacoma Poultry Association and the Rhode Island Red Club of America, had 500 entries, 265 of them Rhode Island Reds. The birds were judged by type, shape, color, undercolor and stance, as well as other standards. The owner of the winning cockerel was Mrs. Charles F. Narrows Bridge - McChord Field Parade, Carsten's Packing Co. float in front of Northern Laundry and Dye Works building. A familiar symbol, the Carstens giant ham looms over the company's princesses and chef as the parade proceeds through the downtown streets of Tacoma on July 1, 1940. 1940 Y.M.B.C. Water Carnival at Point Defiance. View from water of 1920s and 1940 boathouses crowded with spectators. Thousands came out to watch the various boat races and air show at the annual Young Men's Business Club water carnival. The city fireboat was also summoned by Public Safety Commissioner Holmes Eastwood via car radio to stage an exhibition of water power. (T.Times, 7-1-40, p. 12)

Admittance Day Parade in Olympia on November 11, 1939. Soldiers marching along wet street. Since this date was also Armistice Day, honoring the end of World War I, the parade included several contingents of marching men and weapons. This Armistice Day was bittersweet as Europe was already at war and America soon to follow.

Admittance Day Parade in Olympia on November 11, 1939. The parade honored Washington's admittance into the Union 50 years prior and travelled over part of the route of the first statehood celebration promenade in 1889. This parade float features a replica of the covered wagon that brought the first settlers to Tumwater, where the Columbia River branch of the Oregon Trail ended. Sign reads "The End of the Oregon Trail." The float is entered by Cub Scout Pack 5, sponsored by the Eastside Community Center. It is parked on a street with house in background. (T. People standing in line at Olympia Post Office to buy first day issue of new Golden At 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, November 11, 1939, Jubilee postage stamps commemorating 50 years of statehood were placed on sale only at the Olympia Post Office. People are standing in line to purchase the first issue of the stamps. The stamp honors Washington and three other states marking their 50th anniversary: Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota. The stamp is of map design, portraying the four states and indicating the location of their capital cities.

Constanti-Taylor wedding. Wedding couple surrounded by three young men and a young woman pose for a portrait in front of a stucco, Spanish-style house. Marie Eileen Constanti and Thomas Zachary Taylor exchanged wedding vows at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church on March 25, 1940. Shirley Constanti was maid of honor for her sister while Keith Bogan served as best man during the morning ceremonies. A reception was held in the Rose & Gold room of the Hotel Winthrop. The new Mrs. Taylor wore an apple green suit trimmed with cross fox fur for her wedding along with a toast colored straw hat. She graduated from Sumner High School and was affiliated with Delta Alpha Gamma at the College of Puget Sound. The bridegroom attended Bellarmine and Bennett School of Aeronautics. Wedding party listed in Richards records as "Gustie Flemish" and Irene Holz. The party includes two maids of honor, two young female candle lighters, two flowergirls and a young ring bearer. This is believed to be the Holz-Flemish wedding that occurred on June 19, 1940, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Holz with Rev. R.A. Anderson presiding. The beautiful setting consisted of white gladioli, white roses and ivy. The bride wore an ivory satin gown with pearl yoke and a matching pearl coronet in her dark hair. She carried a bouquet of roses and swansonia. Her matron of honor was Mrs. Carroll Hill while Mr. Hill served as the best man. Bridesmaid was Evelyn Freeman. The candlelighters were Mona Mae Heurertz and Lois Holz and the little flower girls, Marlene Stewart and Carol Holz. Dickie Lyons was the ringbearer. (T.Times 6-28-40, p.9 - article only)
