Forrest M. LaSuer, secretary of the Tacoma Moose Lodge, won a membership drive contest in June 1949. Harold Jordan, secretary of the Kelso-Longview Moose Lodge, lost the contest and was required to push LaSuer in a wheelbarrow, wearing a feed-sack dress with bonnet. LaSuer enjoyed the ride - he is wearing his own bonnet and night shirt, is holding a baby bottle and smoking a cigar. Jordan pushed the triumphant LaSuer past the Moose Lodge quarters at 737 Commerce St. (7/5/1949, p.2)

Western singer and motion picture actor Gene Autry visits patients at Cushman Hospital on July 15, 1949. Known as the Cushman Indian Hospital, it had originally housed the Puyallup Indian School. It provided care for Northwest Indian tribal members, especially in the field of tuberculosis. Mr. Autry, dressed in his trademark white hat, smiles at two adult male patients. He had also paid a visit to the children's ward that day. Mr. Autry would be appearing in a Western variety show at Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of the College of Puget Sound later that evening. Harry Hartz (second from left), former automobile racing champion who was a traffic safety specialist at this time, was in Tacoma visiting officials interested in safety. He drove the 1949 Studebaker half-ton pickup truck from Puget Sound to the Great Lakes in a 8,000-mile safety crusade. He was welcomed by, L-R, Chief of Police Robert Marshall, James M. Gilchrist of the Allen Motor Company, Public Safety Commissioner Robert Temme, and A.E. Mulligan of the A.E. Mulligan Company. A map of the United States is displayed in the back of the pickup with the name Studebaker spelled out on it. A sign on the door of the cab says, "Studebaker, Writes its Name Across the Nation". An unidentified employee of the body shop at the Tacoma Auto Sales Company, 723-25 Broadway, wearing a"Piston Service of Tacoma" cap and pushed-up goggles, sands down the right front fender of a car in December, 1947. Tacoma Auto Sales had a body rebuilding department located on site. This service helped customers get their vehicles serviced and the body work done all in one location. Tacoma Auto Sales was the dealer for new and used Pontiacs and Cadillacs in Tacoma.

Elks Christmas Dance Committee was making arrangements for their annual dance. The committee's Chairman was Lowell and Evelyn Wasser, they were in charge of the event. The Elks would be collecting Christmas gifts for needy children between the ages of one and 14 years. The Elks were planning to distribute 600 gifts to children during the holiday season. Renamed Veterans Day in 1953, November 11 was first proclaimed as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. That year, on November 13, John Philip Sousa's band played in the Washington National Guard Armory in Tacoma and President Woodrow Wilson spoke there two months earlier. In 1947, a Military Ball was held on Armistice Day at the Armory, where more than 1,500 people were expected to attend. The presentation of colors to the local reserve units of the Army and Army Air Corps highlighted the evening. Army and Navy dignitaries and prominent civilian guests attended the event. Tacoma Times Carriers were awarded with a weekend trip to Victoria, British Columbia, for their outstanding work with the newspaper. The carriers were leaving on Saturday night and would return on Sunday, 133 carriers were participating in the fun filled weekend. This photograph of the Earl Painting Company, located at 1122 Court D, was taken in November of 1947. At that time, they were working on a major paint job for the Hooker Electrochemical Company on the Tacoma tideflats. Earl Gallmeyer first went into the painting business in Tacoma in 1935. The freight train is said to have moved forward before the track switch was completed, the train then "cornered" the engine, and the caboose crushed into the left side of the cab, pinning Sigvard Hill and killing him instantly. Fern Hill's kindergarten and first grade classes were receiving a tour of the Northern Pacific's roundhouse, inspecting rail equipment and would get to ride aboard a Union Pacific train in November of 1947. College of Puget Sound's Junior Varsity football team was coached by Don Dahlquist (first row, right). In college, Dahlquist had been a star tackle for Utah State. The Junior Varsity football team was made up of forty athletes, mostly freshmen. Their season ended with three wins and three defeats, their biggest wins were against the City Firemen, 24 to 0, and Fort Lewis All Stars, 21 to 0 (Names appear in 1948 Tamanawas).
