Several military officials wearing overcoats salute troops at Governor's Review at National Guard camp. Governor Clarence Martin, second from left, removes his silk hat. Washington's 3000 National Guardsmen went on parade in full force on June 18, 1939, to pay annual honors to their commander-in-chief, Governor Clarence D. Martin. The Review concluded a fifteen day training period at Camp Moss (Murray). Brig. Gen. Maurice Thompson, adjutant general of the Guard, and Brig. Gen. Carlos Penington, camp commander, invited the general public to attend the impressive ceremonies. 3000 accepted the invitation. Due to inclement weather, the elaborate Governor's Concert featuring regimental bands was cancelled. (T.Times, 6-17-39, p. 1, 6-19-39, p. 1, 14) ALBUM 10

No, it's not the Rockettes, it's Coach John Heinrick and his 1939 Stadium High School football team during a practice session. Coach Heinrick, in his fourth year of coaching, was riding the crest of two undefeated seasons with the Tigers. 1939 was not a record year however, as the Blue and Gold suffered its first defeat in 23 games. Having put the pressure of continuing the undefeated tradition behind them, they fought back to win the city crown for the 6th consecutive year. The Tacoma Times lauded their courage and stamina in the face of defeat and voted the entire team onto their high school football honor roll. Team members, left to right, are Vern Miller, Rod Giske, Roy Murphy, Jack Wilson, Austin Fengler, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich, Dick Beckman, Chuck Horjes, Bill Gustafson and Fred Angus. (T. Two unidentified nurses adjust the x-ray equipment at Tacoma General Hospital in April of 1939 as a patient waits lying on a table, covered chin down with a white sheet. Although by 1939 it was well known that lead was effective for protecting against x-ray exposure, neither the patient in this photo or the nurses appear to be wearing any protective lead or lead-equivalency shielding. Established in 1882 as the Fannie C. Paddock Hospital, the facility became the Tacoma General Hospital in 1912. Ordered by Clarence J. Cummings, Superintendent. See also A8155 image 3

On April 13, 1939, Ted Shawn and his company of male dancers performed at Jason Lee. Interested spectators in their "smart spring ensembles" were Lillian (Mrs. Robert M.) Jackson, Shannon Smith and Alta (Mrs. George H.) Raleigh. Divinity student Shawn had taken up dance as therapy after a bout with diphtheria left him temporarily paralyzed. He discovered a passion for dance that would guide the remainder of his life. He was one of the early pioneers of 20th century modern dance. (T. Times, 4/15/1939, p. 7)

Calvary soldier jumps his horse over two men huddled under umbrellas to display his equestrian abilities for the Governor's Review at National Guard camp. He may have belonged to the Headquarters Troop, 24th Calvary Division, Washington National Guard, stationed in Tacoma and known locally as "Troop B." Each year the governor watched as the state's National Guardsmen would mass and pay honors to their commander-in-chief. Although the rainy weather cancelled the elaborate Governor's Band Concert, it did not prevent the display of maneuvers and demonstrations. 3000 civilians enjoyed the day's activities at Camp Moss (Murray). On May 25-26, 1939, Lincoln High School's music department presented the Gilbert and Sullivan comic one act opera "Trial by Jury." The focus of the plot line of this witty satire on the legal system is a breach of promise suit brought by a jilted bride against a bridegroom who loves another. The judge settles the case by announcing his intention to marry the bride himself. The opera's featured performers were Robert Stabbert (playing the usher), Willard Norman (defendant), Wilton Ramage (judge), Helen Breummer (plaintiff), Leonard Tessier (counsel for the defense) and Tom Galloway (foreman of the jury.) Also pictured is the chorus of bridesmaids and the jury. (T. Times 5/19/1939, pg. 3)
