Ship modeler N.C. Garrison presents his model of tug "Narcissus" to Marjorie Rambeau at Mayor Cain's reception at the Hotel Winthrop for the "Tugboat Annie Sails Again" premiere on October 18, 1940. Henry Foss is at far left, brother Wedell Foss at far right. Mr. Garrison, 6414 Pacific Avenue, had 28 of his models on display throughout the city during the week. Ship modeler N.C. Garrison presents model of the tug "Narcissus" to actress Marjorie Rambeau at the "Tugboat Annie" dinner held at the Winthrop Hotel on October 18, 1940. Miss Rambeau played the title character in the sequel to the 1933 box-office success. Mr. Garrison also presented an intricate model of a square-rigger to actress-writer Hedda Hopper who attended the event. Seated at the speakers' table on the right, behind a glass-encased model of a typical ocean-going tugboat, are two real-life tugboat captains, Anna Grimison and Dolly Lewis. Among those standing in the background are Mayor Harry P. Cain (partially hidden) and Wedel Foss. Boxer Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight champion of the world, blows out the candles on a cake for his 49th birthday during a visit to Tacoma in support of the 5th War Bond drive. He was surprised by the birthday cake during a dinner held in his honor at the Hotel Winthrop. Dempsey was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard at the time. He had retired from professional boxing in 1940 with a record of 64-6-9. 49 of his wins were by knockout. He would go on to become a successful restaurant owner in New York. ALBUM 9. The Sabre Room, Winthrop Hotel, Mr. Boyd. A well-dressed gentleman sits at a desk talking on the telephone. He is looking at a card pulled from a small, metal card file. The desk has a day calendar open at the back edge and a lamp with a carved head base is lit. Another lamp is lit in the background. The man's cuff-link shines in the light. The Sabre Room opened in September 1950. Trader Vic, who specialized in designing unusual spots, had a personal hand in creating the new addition to the Hotel Winthrop. (TNT, 9/24/1950, p.6)

Pacific Coast Hockey League was holding their annual meeting in Tacoma at the Winthrop Hotel. Ice Hockey representatives from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Fresno, Oakland, California; Vancouver, British Columbia; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle and Tacoma attended the meeting. The Fresno franchise made the surprise announcement of withdrawing from the League; and the Victoria, British Columbia franchise applied to enter the League. Liberty Bell presentation during US Treasury Savings Bond Drive. A replica of the Liberty Bell has been placed next to the speakers platform erected in front of the Hotel Winthrop at the corner of Broadway and 9th Street. People have begun to gather for the ceremonies. Reno Odlin holds onto Sandy Custis, son of Neal and Nancy Heston, as he and Margaret Marshall of Seattle ring the bell of a replica of the original Liberty Bell to officially open the 1950 Independence Savings Bond Drive. Reno Odlin was state chairman of the savings bond division. Margaret Marshall was a descendant of Chief Justice John J. Marshall at whose funeral procession the original Liberty Bell cracked in 1835. Two gentlemen who were present at the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads board of directors luncheon on July 13, 1950, at the Hotel Winthrop, gaze at an enlarged photograph of the newly completed Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed during high winds on November 7, 1940. The man seated is C.H. Buford, president of Milwaukee Road.

The Hotel Winthrop on Broadway is the location for a luncheon honoring the board of directors of the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroads on July 13, 1950. The nine men are posed under the Rotary Club's banner. Seated second to the left is C.H. Buford, president of the Milwaukee Road. According to the Northwest Room's clipping files, this railroad was the first with improvements in transportation: owning and operating its own sleeping and dining cars, installing electric lighting and radio-phones in passenger trains, and being the only road to operate its own through tracks on its own tracks from Chicago to Puget Sound.

Laura Lee and Lanna Lee, the twin daughters of Ward and Betty Allen, celebrated their second birthday on November 27, 1948. This photograph makes it look like they skipped cake and had turkey instead. Cook Ivan Talbot, head chef at the Winthrop Hotel, holds up a 25-pound Thanksgiving turkey for their inspection. The Club of Hearts held their 16th annual Christmas dance in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel, 773 Broadway, in December of 1948. Four of the "Tacoma Belles" who attended the holiday ball were: (l to r) Shirley Larson, Patricia Perella, Marjie Joy Miller and Rosemary Tollefson. Winthrop Hotel's new Daffodil Dining Room will have a full restaurant, coffee bar and shop. Ann Rickard, Western Hotels' decorator, stated the room will have a strong yellow over the ceiling, two tones of red and chartreuse on the walls, pebble cloth drapes and deep green on eight chandeliers; Victor Jones and Associates of Seattle are the architects. Internationally known restaurateur, Trader Vic, had brought his world famous menu items to Tacoma. The Winthrop Hotel and Trader Vic enterprises have remodeled the restaurant site, at an estimated cost of $45,000, and opened up the Sabre Room. View of Mayor C. Two crossed sabres decorate the appropriately named Sabre Room in the Winthrop Hotel in November, 1955. The decor appears Elizabethan with a predominance of wood, including wooden beams and simple chairs and tables. A touch of the modern appears with the presence of the room's chef in his open kitchen, just steps away from dining customers. The popular Sabre Room had been completely redecorated and was reopened on November 15, 1955. It retained its Old English atmosphere in the design by Arthur Morgan & Associates of Seattle.
