Scottish Rite reunion, Mr. Farnsworth. Scottish Rite bodies of Freemasonry in the Tacoma district held their 84th semi-annual reunion the week of May 16, 1948, and dedicated it to the memory of the late Felix Robinson, 33rd degree, in appreciation for his 27 years of activity in the Masonic order. Over 100 petitioners were expected to form the reunion class for the ritualistic induction. The Scottish Rite of the Freemasons appears to have been organized in the United States in 1801. It offers higher Degrees to a Master Mason (the third and highest of the traditional degrees, and as far as he can go in his Blue Lodge). The Scottish Rite is open to Jews and others. 40 et 8 Parade, Times, Sandegren. The Paul Bunyan entry in the American Legion's 40 et 8 auxiliary's Goof Parade included Babe the Blue Ox with Paul Bunyan astride her. A group of bewhiskered axe-wielding loggers accompany them in the parade. They have stopped to pose in front of the Northwest Airlines office on the corner of 9th and Pacific Avenue. Thirteen volunteers were photographed in early December of 1946 wrapping Christmas gifts for the servicemen who were patients at Madigan and American Lake hospitals. The ladies are hard at work in the Red Cross Building at 702-04 Broadway, hoping to make the "Best Christmas Yet" for the hospital-bound military personnel. At least 3,000 individual Christmas parcels were provided during the 1946 holiday season. Emmett Anderson was the chairman of this community service channeled through the Red Cross. Among the largest donors were the Tacoma and Puyallup Elks Lodges, the Army-Navy Club and the Central Labor Council. (T.Times, 12/7/1946, p.7-article)

Elks Club, publicity for Stocking Fillers. A new organization in the Tacoma Lodge of Elks is the F.K.S. Construction Company to rehabilitate the Elk's facilities and construction at the Temple. F.K.S. comes from the names of their three officers, L-R above, Max Frolic, Rinaldo Keasal and Walter Sutter. These men are studying plans submitted by the building committee which called for a $250,000 expenditure for a new addition and modernization throughout. (T.Times, 10/14/1946, p.8) TPL-9827

Epsilon Sigma Alpha Jewel Pin Ceremony. Four new pledges were presented with their pins and wristlets made up of golden chrysanthemums and tied with blue ribbons (the sorority's colors are blue and gold). The new members, Frances Karr, Arlene Hefferon, Mrs. John Crawford and Elsa L. Roberts, are seen seated. The many small stuffed animals they are holding and are on the floor are part of the social Christmas work being done by the sorority to be given to underpriviledged children. Members of the University Union Club held their annual "Turkey Hop" informal dance at the Club's building at 539 Broadway, on November 23, 1946. Members looked forward to the yearly event because many of them would be taking home a turkey to grace their Thanksgiving day table. Smorgasbord dinner at University-Union Club, Quentin Schmitt, University-Union Club. The University-Union Club held their 5th annual smorgasbord April 19, 1948. The planning committee wore Scandinavian costumes and a native accordianist played. The committee is standing behind the buffet that beautifully displayed the Scandinavian foods. Names listed. General Kaiser coming down gang plank from ship, Mt. McKinley, Chamber of Commerce, Armed Services Committee, Col. James Stack. Brig. Gen. L.B. Keiser led 15,000 troops from Fort Lewis in maneuvers in Hawaii called "Operation Miki". The troops were brought home on board the U.S.S. Mount McKinley which docked at the Tacoma Naval Station. They were met by the Fort Lewis band and the Red Cross. Red Cross volunteers handed out milk, candy and apples. (TNT, 11/17/1949, p.1)

Elks Club, Ray Tarr. A huge number of Elks members, 50 strong, have been working on their annual Stocking Fillers campaign to help underpriviledged children for 1949. Committees have been arranging for the big Christmas party for the children and supplying food, clothing and medicine for the deserving. The local Elks lodge has been providing this Christmas cheer for 60 years. A motor scooter used for picking up donations is parked in front of them. Names are listed in the newspaper. Kerr at their November 1949 meeting. Mrs. Kerr was the current grand worthy matron of the grand chapter of the state of Washington and she was visiting all the local chapters of O.E.S. this week.Mrs. H.J. New officers of Order of Runeberg, Wedgewood Room. The western district Order of Runeberg held their biennial convention in Tacoma in August, 1950. Newly elected officers pose smilingly in the Hotel Winthrop's Wedgewood Room. There were 75 official delegates to the convention and 118 visitors, with over 60 from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Eureka. The Order of Runeberg is named for Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a noted Finnish poet. His poems and essays, based on Swedish culture, have been compared with Goethe and Shakespeare. More than 600 members of the Washington State Junior Chamber of Commerce attended the state convention held in Tacoma at the Winthrop Hotel. The Junior Chamber of Commerce would be electing new officers for this year; and they designated Spokane as next year's site for the state convention. The convention consisted of several meetings and programs and would wrap up with a Saturday night banquet at the Top of the Ocean restaurant. Tacoma's Rudder Club was located at 735 Commerce Street in Tacoma's business district; the club manager was Walter Geehan. Throughout the year the Rudder Club hosted and sponsored many events, including dinners, luncheons and style shows for members and their families and guests.
