Christ's crucifixion in stone or marble appears to be on permanent display at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Two angels kneel in prayer on either side of the monument which is decorated in native greenery. Women are portrayed collapsed in grief while others stand and pray. The juxtaposition of plywood angels and stone sculpture apparently works; it is a pleasing blend of materials. The Calvary Catholic Cemetery was one of Tacoma's oldest, purchased in 1905 to be used as burial grounds for the area's Catholic community, and spanned 35 acres. Boats and motors could be rented for a day's cruise on the calm waters of Commencement Bay or for fishing and crabbing. The park by this time enjoyed the emergence of a more park-like setting with the planting of hundreds of trees and landscaping to replace the tree stumps and brush originally situated on the land donated by Charles B. ca. 1910. Two women, names not provided, pause to enjoy the sights of Wright Park's Bird Lake while on a rustic wood bridge circa 1910. Thanks to the planned design of Edward Schwagerl and execution by Ebenezer Roberts, Wright Park delighted its visitors with many rustic features including bridges and elevated flower planters. Located near downtown Tacoma, Wright Park provided a relaxing and soothing atmosphere in what was increasing becoming an urban area. (McGinnis: Tacoma's Wright Park, p. 29)

Mount Rainier (then called Mt. Tacoma by locals) has been superimposed in this February, 1930, photograph which featured the Science Hall located on the College of Puget Sound campus. Opening of visitor's center on Mt. Rainier in 1966. Crowd of people at reception. The official opening took place on September 3, 1966, and drew many visitors and a host of dignitaries including Congressman Floyd Hicks, Director of the National Park Service George B. Hartzog, Jr., Tacoma City Manager David Rowlands, Pierce County Commissioner Harry Sprinker and Senator Henry M. Jackson. Senator Jackson, a principal speaker at the dedication, indicated that the facility was the largest of its kind in the federal parks system. The building at Paradise was circular and built of reinforced concrete with a pre-cast frame. 65-foot roof beams rested on Y-columns. It had a glassed-in third story observation deck. It was designed by George Wimberly of Honolulu who worked along with associate Gerald Allison of the Tacoma firm of McGuire & Muri. Mrs. Foster was crowned queen in Tacoma's first annual Rose Carnival by Governor John H. McGraw. She was presented the silver key to the city by Mayor Angelo V. Regent Park residents of all ages pitched in and helped to spruce up the Spring Lake area of their community on May 17, 1925. New shrubs and flowers were planted and watered and vegetation trimmed. Regents Park and its 306 residents would incorporate as the Town of Fircrest in September of 1925. G72.1-117 (TNT 5-18-25, p. 5-article on beautification project)

Indian cemetery. This was the Puyallup Indian cemetery located next to the Cushman Veterans Hospital, 2002 E. 28th St, as pictured in May of 1925. Indians under the direction of H.C. Sicade of Fife had spent the month cleaning and renovating the old cemetery. They graded, sown grass seed, planted new shrubs, installed a 600-foot wire fence, repaired 300-feet of old fence, and erected 500 marble monuments. Henry Sicade had secured a $3000 appropriation from the U.S. government for the complete renovation and restoration of the cemetery. There were about 2000 graves but many had been obliterated. Among those buried there were Chief Salatat, Chief Thomas Stolyer, Chief Sitwell, Chief Tommy Lane and Chief Leschi. The low-lying white fences surround the tribal cemetery have since been replaced by high stone walls. The small church next door was a Presbyterian mission founded in 1881 and since rebuilt. The Cushman Veterans (later Tacoma Indian Hospital) Hospital has been demolished. TPL-8741; G5.1-021 (photograph has black marks) (TNT 5-19-25, p. 11)

Rose garden, Point Defiance Park. Point Defiance Park has more than an acre of rose gardens for the public to enjoy. This view of the park in 1924 shows gardens neatly laid out with benches strategically placed for people to sit and gaze at the many varieties of roses. The oldest of the gardens was planted in 1895. Members of the community gathered on August 5, 1919, at the north end of Wright Park to listen to the first public children's "sing." 200 children had practiced for three months under the direction of Mrs. Zoe Pearl Park. Among the 2000 people in attendance were members of the military and undoubtedly proud parents and grandparents of the chorus. On Sunday, January 25, 1942, Jean Hudson, Tacoma Times ski writer, was pictured presenting the Tacoma Times trophy to Carl Neu. Carl had won the slalom race at the 11th annual Tacoma Winter Sports Carnival at Paradise Valley, Mount Rainier National Park. In Miss Hudson's other hand was the prize wrist watch. Mr. Neu also won the race two years prior, a future third win would retire the trophy. (T. Times 1/26/1942, pg. 11)

Mary Thomas (center) was queen of the 1942 Tacoma Chamber of Commerce Winter Sports Carnival held at Paradise Lodge on Mount Rainier, January 24th and 25th. Standing next to Mary are Rita Hume of Seattle, who won the Rhodes Brothers trophy for the women's slalom race, and Jack Horr, from the Stadium High School ski team, who won the junior downhill event.
