McKinley School, 2nd grade class photo. These smiling children posed for their class picture near the end of the 1951 school year. Among them was Dorothy Mika, second row to the left, second seat back. Dorothy (later Dorothy Stewart) grew up to become a longtime staff member of the Tacoma Public Library.

Students in innovative teacher Natalie Blix's first grade classroom at McKinley School in 1937 were proud of the playhouse and library built by the class as a vocabulary lesson. The six year old students learned vocabulary with hammers, saws and nails rather than books. While they constructed the small building at the back of their classroom, they learned the names of the various objects used in its construction and how to recognize them in print. The small "handymen" painted, wallpapered, sewed drapes and built furniture. After completing the playhouse, the children decided to build their own library complete with shelves and books they created themselves. (T.Times, 10-16-1937, p. 1].

The teacher of these 26 youngsters stands at the left; she is believed to be Miss Stella Hanson. McKinley School was built in 1908 and is located on McKinley Hill, on Tacoma's historic east side.

ca. 1927. In 1927, first grade scholars sit at their desks in McKinley School showing off their handmade alphabet cards. The walls behind are adorned with student art work, including images of "Mount Tacoma," the name preferred in the early years by most Tacomans for our beloved Mount Rainier. This eight room McKinley schoolhouse was erected in 1908 at 3702 McKinley. Additions were made in 1910 and then the school remained virtually the same until 1954. These McKinley School students dressed as Native Americans posed at the school, 3702 McKinley Avenue, in early November of 1922. All the children wore headdresses and fringed outfits made of burlap. The 25 pupils participated in the school's annual carnival that closed on November 10th and featured on that date a dramatization of Longfellow's "Hiawatha." McKinley Elementary School was built in 1908 and named in honor of President William McKinley. In 2008 the school celebrated its 100th year anniversary.
