Bremerton Sun staff annual picnic aboard Scripps yacht. The staff of the newspaper and their families were treated to a company picnic each summer held in various Kitsap County locations. In 1941 this family of four were photographed aboard the Scripps yacht in obvious enjoyment of this special occasion.

On September 25, 1941, Sgt. Robert J. Forrest of Tacoma Company C, 4th Washington Volunteer Infantry was photographed with a recruitment poster for the Washington State Guard. He is wearing the uniform that had been recently adopted for use by the Guard. The Washington State Guard was formed in 1941 to replace the Washington National Guard which had been called into active duty. Although 80 men had already signed up for Tacoma Co. C, another 100 were needed to fill out Tacoma's two units. Sgt. Forrest was a coppersmith at the Seattle Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp. He was married and the father of two sons. (T. Pretty College of Puget Sound coed Peggy Mason has no problem interesting some British aviators staying at the Winthrop Hotel in buying one of the paper "bricks" used in the CPS fund raiser. The pilots are staying at the Winthrop while waiting to ferry some bombers from McChord Field to England.

On October 9, 1941, Pan American sent representatives to Tacoma to begin shipment of a portable furnace manufactured by Heatlox to one of their snowbound northern airports in Alaska. A group of four men in suits are pictured with the furnace in front of the Heatlox offices. They are believed to be owners Fred Langeland and D.H. Powers and two engineers from Pan Am. The mobile outdoor heater could operate at 50 degrees below zero, warming up the motors and interiors of airplanes. The 3,000 pound heater was now mounted on wheels, later these would be replaced with skis, making it easier to move in the snow. Encased in an insulated metal cabinet, each unit would consume 5 gallons of fuel oil per hour and cost $1,000. Each air base would only require 1 unit. ( T. Times 10/9/1941, pg. 8)

This mobile outdoor heater, manufactured by Heatlox Co. of Tacoma, will be shipped to Alaska by Pan American in order that plane interiors and motors could be warmed up in minus zero degree temperatures. Pan Am representatives and store employees are pictured with the 3,000-lb. furnace outside Heatlox offices at 4320 South Tacoma Way on October 9, 1941. The heater would consume five gallons of fuel oil per hour and cost $1,000.

Ray Gamble with trophy. This is possibly the trophy given at the yearly Pacific Coast Association of Magicians for the best card trick shown at the convention. Mr. Gamble was an avid amateur magician and card tricks were some of his favorites. He was instrumental in the formation of the above mentioned Association and the first man to offer a convention trophy for a trick. In making the award, the judges gave greater credit to the contestant if his trick was simple, practical and original and within the abilities of the average performer. The trophy was described as a tall gold pillar, mounted on a heavy base. On the top of the pillar is a winged figure bearing aloft a fan of cards. In September of 1941, David Miller (far left) and Chief Jobe Charley (far right), the 81-year-old patriarch of the Yakima Nation's Great Council, came with their wives to the Federal court in Tacoma to plead the case for their treaty fishing rights. They came to argue that the Bonneville dam had backed up the waters of the Columbia River and its tributary, the White Salmon River, spoiling their "usual and accustomed" fishing grounds. Mr. Miller's wife Bessie Charley-Miller is seated next to him. (Additional identification provided by a family member)

Mrs. William Schmechel, 3519 No. Union Ave., and her daughter, Theresa Anne, won a prize in a special drawing at St. Joseph's Hospital in May of 1941. Because Anne and her mother were in the hospital on National Hospital Day, their names were entered in the contest. Anne won a bank account in her name with an opening deposit of $10. (T. On June 6, 1942, commencement exercises were held at Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. Eighty-nine degrees were being awarded, including an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Government to Governor Arthur B. Langlie. The Alpha Zeta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha held an informal initiation on November 11, 1941 in Sumner and a formal initiation on November 13th in Tacoma. Safeway Store, new building at Sixth and Pine. The photograph shows a side view of the modest Art Deco style concrete store, featuring the new paving at Sixth and Pine. The grocery store had its Grand Opening on October 10, 1941. It replaced the oldest Safeway in Tacoma, located at 6th Ave and Fife. A sharp "jog" in the road at 6th and Pine had been straightened out and the new pavement is highlighted in this photograph. (T. Times 10/9/1941, pg. 13)
