He was not present at this tribute but hundreds of his supporters attended the free two-hour variety show which honored Tacoma's "fighting mayor." Harry P. From left to right, Mrs. Frank Thornburg, Mrs. James E. Stockton, Mrs. Arthur Goldsborough, Mrs. Charles Mojean, and Mrs. Charles Bowers of the Pierce County Red Cross production department worked at wrapping some of the over 4,000 Christmas packages that were given to soldier patients and military personnel at Madigan General Hospital and the McChord Field Station Hospital in December, 1944. The gift program was coordinated through the Pierce and Thurston County chapters of the Red Cross. Over 44,000 items were donated by various clubs and organizations throughout the two county region. The hospital's commanding officers conducted a survey to determine what the men wanted most. Along with others presents, each package contained a book and a pack of cigarettes. Telephone operator Marilyn McNeil enjoys nine cups of 5 cent coffee at the Rialto Candy Shop. When the Office of Price Administration required restaurants to lower the price of coffee to 5 cents per cup, most downtown restaurants complied while some appealed the reduction. (T. Maefair Apartment fire hearing. It was determined after a long hearing that unfortunately the loss of nineteen lives occurred primarily because of human error. No criminal negligence was found. (T. Times, 3/2/45, p. 1).

After a long struggle a fisherman, who wanted to remain anonymous, caught a Basking shark while fishing on Commencement Bay in October 1944. The shark was 23 feet long and weighed between 400-500 pounds. The shark is identified as a maneater because of its double rows of teeth. View of fisherman holding shark's mouth open. (T. American Girl launching. The American Girl tuna boat, built by Petrich Shipbuilding, was commissioned by Joe Alves and Joe Machado. They are affiliated with the Van Camps Seafood Co. in San Diego, California. Stern view of American Girl tuna boat in Puget Sound. The ship was launched at Old Town dock on July 23, 1944. Peterson Boat Building Co. was started in 1942 by George Peterson, a long time Tacoma boat builder. This was a small but busy plant. Governor Mon C. Wallgren marching down the steps of the State Legislative (Capitol) Building on Inauguration Day, January 10, 1945. Unlike previous inaugurations which were held in a joint session of the House and Senate, Mr. Wallgren's occurred outdoors on a flag-decked platform near the Capitol steps. 150 state guardsmen were in attendance, in uniform with fixed bayonets, and formed an aisle six feet wide from the doors of the building to the inaugural platform. Governor Wallgren was escorted to the platform by members of the legislature. Wallgren was one of the few men in history to serve as a U.S. Representative, a U.S. Senator, and as a governor. He served as governor until 1949 and was succeeded by his predecessor, Arthur B. Langlie. ALBUM 10. (TNT 1-09-45, p. 14, 1-11-45, p. 1)

Governor Mon C. Wallgren takes the oath of office on the steps of the State Legislative (Capitol) Building on Inauguration Day, 1945. He was sworn in by Chief Justice Walter B. Beals on January 10, 1945, as 5000 watched the outdoor ceremony. Instead of the customary joint session between the House and Senate in House chambers, the new governor chose to have the inauguration day ceremonies outdoors where more could observe.
