This group of Shipmates are all wearing the latest summer "Sea and Sun" fashions, only available at Fisher's Department Store. Fisher's was about to have a grand opening on their third floor featuring the new "Fashion Center". Tacoma Yacht Club Shipmates and Fishers hosted the style show at the Top of the Ocean, where more than 718 people attended (T. Times, 4/19/47, p. 13).

This photograph was taken in 1947 shortly after the Tacoma Fire Dept. bought three new fire trucks from Tacoma Truck and Tractor Company. The Mack 1000 gpm pumper is parked in front of Fire Station No. 2, at 2701 Tacoma Avenue So. Fire Station No. 2 was built in 1907 from a plan by Paul Bergfeld, and was added to the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1986.

Deep Sea has trawl gear of the Icelandic type, with a high throat, designed to take free swimming fish of the cod and pollock type, in addition to bottom dwelling species such as King crabs, sole and flounders. The 140 foot trawler, built by Birchfield Boiler, Inc., will offer her owners, Deep Sea Trawlers, a complete fishing, packing and freezing plant. "Deep Sea" will be able to accommodate thirty two fishermen (Pacific Fisherman, July 1947, p. 40-41).

On March 16, 1947 the temperature in Tacoma reached a record high of 67 degrees. Summer-like weather had children and adults out and about enjoying the sunshine. Paul Gerber, 11, and several of his friends, thinking it felt like swimming-hole weather, went to Hoodlum Lake near Franklin Elementary School. Paul spied a "Danger" sign that was posted during the winter months, when the lake is partially frozen over, floating in the water and used it as a raft. (T. Times, 3/17/47, p. 1).

The Veterans of Foreign wars were wrapping up four days of meetings after having a successful convention, with a parade through downtown Tacoma. More than 3,000 delegates and members of the women's auxiliary from Washington State, and 2,000 marchers, representing other organizations would participate. Mrs. W.W. Seymour (seated, middle left) was surrounded by happy girl scouts gathered at the St. Albans Girl's Camp during August of 1948. In 1934, Mrs. Seymour had generously donated the 450 acres, encompassing Lake Devereaux, in Mason County, on which the camp was built, in memory of her husband. St. Albans was the third camp donated by the Seymour family. The others were Camp Seymour (the Y.M.C.A. camp on Glen Cove) and the boy scout camp on Hood Canal. (T.N.T., 8/15/48, p. D-1).

In July of 1948, Tacoma's Plymouth dealers sponsored the preliminary competition for the Second International Model Plane Contest. Gerald Thomas, shown with the three trophies that he won, was one of the big winners of the Tacoma Plymouth Aero League contest. The finals were held in Detroit in August. (T. In July of 1948 close to 100 model airplane enthusiasts took part in the Plymouth Aero League competition held in the Stadium Bowl. Sponsored by Tacoma's Plymouth dealers, the Tacoma contest was for "controlled type" planes; the models competed for speed, stunt flying and "scale model". Ray Welch (kneeling, 3rd from left) won 1st place in the junior scale models competition with his biplane. The young man standing behind Ray Welch holding a plane is probably William Lloyd, who placed first in the "D" junior speed contest. R.C. Sommerville, the general sales manager of the Plymouth corporation, made a special trip to Tacoma from Detroit to watch the contest; he personally handed out the trophies and prizes to the winners. Alice S. Franklin was appointed President of the Tacoma Garden Club at a tea held at Doris McKendry's home. This is Roy Hawkins, Tacoma heavyweight, in a typical boxing pose from July of 1948. He was preparing for a 15-rounder with Bill Petersen of Seattle which would be held in Portland on August 3rd. The News Tribune indicated that many of his fans were planning to journey down to Portland for the event. Roy Hawkins had knocked out "Newsboy" Millich in a July 1st bout at the Tacoma Armory. Permanente Metals of Tacoma was setting up a new metallurgical research lab, it was expected to be in full operation this fall. The Tacoma plant was one of the newest and most modern aluminum reduction plants in the country. ca. 1948. Portrait of Tacoma Mayor Val Fawcett. Mayor Fawcett, son of multi-term mayor A.V. Fawcett, had an illustrious career in Tacoma politics. He had himself served multiple terms as Finance Commissioner, then became Acting Mayor in 1943 upon the departure of Harry P. Cain for the European Theater. He won election in 1946 to serve a full term. Val Fawcett became a consultant for the investment security firm of McLean & Co. in 1950 where he worked until his death of an apparent heart attack in 1965. He had belonged to several civic and fraternal organizations including the Masons, the American Legion, Elks, Eagles, Moose, Tacoma Athletic Commission and the Gyro Club. Meeting at Eagles Hall for Mr. James Metcalfe, Tribune, Ernie Knight. James J. Metcalfe was many things, a poet who contributed a popular News Tribune feature, "Portraits", and a former FBI man whose experience included the rugged campaign which ended with the break-up of the Dillinger gang and the outlaw's death. After his address at Eagles Hall August 19, 1948, Metcalfe had been autographing booklets of his collected poems in the lobby. Now he's signing the cuff of one of the Eagles white shirts. Gerald Thomas (third from left, front row) will be representing Tacoma in the 2nd Annual International Model Plane Contest, which is being sponsored by the Plymouth Motor Corporation. Gerald is the winner of the model plane contest that took place in Tacoma at Stadium Bowl. He will be traveling to Detroit, Michigan to participate in the big event, all expenses are being covered by the Tacoma Plymouth dealerships. Potato chip and popcorn factory, Nalley's, Henry Willis. Many women are at work at several different work stations in the assembly-line system used at Nalley's in cooling, bagging, and preparing the potato chips for shipment. A separate facility was built on part of the 15-acre tract on South Tacoma Way for the manufacture of potato chips. The chip plant in Spokane had reached its capacity and still the demand was high. This new plant was the home of one of the subsidiary companies, United Foods, Inc. TPL-9607

This aerial photograph of the Point Defiance Boat House and Pavilion was taken in August of 1948. Built on the site of the park's first pavilion, this large complex of buildings was the last project completed by the W.P.A. in the park. The pavilion was used for a number of years as the site of the Point Defiance Aquarium, and was destroyed by fire in 1972. The boat house was destroyed by an arson fire in September of 1984. Today a new boat house and restaurant stand on the site. TPL-8365

Appearing on stage at the Olympus Hotel in August of 1948 was noted African American organist Selika Pettiford. Ms. Pettiford is seated at an electric organ equipped with two keyboards. At her side is a piano which she also used during her performances. Two mirrors, set at an angle to each other, show Ms. Pettiford's reflected image. Selika Pettiford, according to an article in the March 18, 1944, issue of Billboard Magazine, studied piano with Paderewski and organ with Jesse Crawford. Her work was devoted principally to the organ. She was a talented linguist who was able to sing in Latin, French, Hawaiian, Russian, Spanish and German. Besides appearing in several motion pictures, she also was a former accompanist to Marian Anderson. (Billboard, March 18, 1944, p. 31-article)

Poggie Derby at Pt. Defiance Picnic Beach, Isaah Walton League, Erling Bergerson. 24 boys and girls fished in the Father-Mother-Son-Daughter dog fish derby held August 15, 1948, at Point Defiance Park. They brought in 60 dog fish. The Erling Bergerson and Bob Foz trophy and 1st prize went to David Scott with a 35" dog fish. Bobby Scott took 2nd place with a 33" dog fish. 3rd place went to Bill Schneider, 4th place to Raymond Cox and 5th place to Buzzy Cain.
