The symbol of his company, Cheney Lumber, appears in the upper left hand corner of the photograph. The company had become well known for the manufacture of Cheney Studs building material. The Cheney Studs logo also appeared on many of the uniforms of the youth sports teams that Ben Cheney sponsored.

Five of the barbering students studying under E.S. West at the Tacoma Vocational-Technical School, 1101 Yakima Avenue South, were photographed in 1949 while practicing their new skills on five unidentified boys. The 1,712 hour, nine-month course in barbering was the only one of its kind offered in a vocational-technical school west of the Mississippi. Tacoma Vocational-Technical School began building their facilities in 1940. After the first wing was constructed, the schools facilities were used as a war job training center during WWII. The name of the school was changed to L.H. Bates Vocational-Technical Institute in 1969 to honor the man who was hired in 1944 to be the school's vocational training director. The automotive electricians were located at 810 A St. The company's panel truck was pictured outside the business. The Hotel Olympus can be seen to the left above the facilities. More than 10,000 people joined together for prayer and songs at the 1949 Easter sunrise service at Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood. It was estimated to be the largest group to ever participate in local Easter worship services. A portion of the large crowd was captured through a doorway as they attended the annual sunrise service. Trumpets proclaimed dawn, and the service began shortly thereafter. (T.N.T., 4/18/49, p. 1).

Other electric signs are also visible, including: the restaurant name sign, "EAT", "Fish and Chips", and a portion of the drugstore sign in foreground. On May 11, 1949 fire trucks, equipment and fire fighters from McChord Field and from Lakewood helped extinguish the blaze that destroyed this dry cleaning establishment. Joseph L. Carman III and his newlywed bride, Barbara Carman, have just returned from Berkeley, California were the young couple was married. The Carman's were married in California and had their wedding reception at the bride's aunt and uncle's home. They spent their honeymoon in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Eagles. The Eagles had an all-accordion band, the first organized since before World War II. They presented a recital May 25, 1949, at Eagles Temple. The band was part of the Eagles' youth guidance program and was under the direction of Louis Nomellini (standing center, first row).
