ca. 1957. Rowland Pontiac - Cadillac dealership. New Cadillacs in showroom, used Pontiacs, Cadillacs and other automobiles in carport area and outside. Neon service sign, moved here from Commerce St. side of old downtown location, at far right in photo. Rowland Pontiac-Cadillac was located on South Tacoma Way, the city's "auto row." Irwin-Jones Motor Co.'s Truck Department was the former occupant of this site.

Tacoma was introduced to McDonald's hamburgers in 1963 when the franchised restaurant chain built its golden arches at 802 Tacoma Avenue South. When this photograph was taken, sometime after 1967, the popular fast-food chain had four outlets in Tacoma and was selling 3 million hamburgers each day nationwide.

ca. 1946. Motel Waltoma, 9200 South Tacoma Way, Lakewood. The motel was built in 1938 by Walt and Oma Kupfer, hence its unusual name. It was designed by Fred Michel and Fred Michel and Jos. Brewer were the contractors. The Waltoma consisted of six double cottages. Over 2500 persons attended its grand opening beginning July 31, 1938. The sign in front of the motel indicated that it was approved by Duncan Hines, in 1946, and the Automobile Club of Washington. Duncan Hines was a travelling salesman turned food and lodging critic who published a book called "Lodging for a Night" in 1938, extolling the best places to stay while on the road.

ca. 1938. Ben's Economy Groceteria and Mosier's Meat, 764 So. 56th St., Tacoma. The store was built around 1937. In 1951, it became Fagerholm's Associated Grocers (AG) Market.

ca. 1931. This was how the new drive-in Stadium Market at 618-20 No. 1st Street appeared in 1931. The new market's main appeal was its "expansive" parking, for up to 80 cars, and its modern concept of "park while you purchase." Built to cater to the new motoring public, the store offered no home deliveries. The market formally opened in September of 1931. It was located on the site of the old Annie Wright Seminary in the Allen Motor Co. annex. Upstairs, with street entrance at 629-31 Division Ave., was the Packard Tacoma Company. Renting retail space in the Stadium Market's "spacious" and "ample" enclosure were Pay'n Takit (featured on two exterior signs), Van de Kamp's Bakery, Greens Dairy & Poultry, Stadium Florist, Frank's Fruit & Produce, Stadium Fruit and Produce, Stadium Coffee Shop, E.P. Rowe- tea & coffee, Shenkel Fruit & Vegetable, Marush Fish & Oyster, Stadium Meat Market and Alder Street Bakery. (TNT 9/4/1931, pg. 17)

ca. 1913. This photograph of the Eggers Fish Co., located at the City Dock at the foot of South 15th St., was taken circa 1913. The company had previously been known as the American Fish Co. which had long been operated by Theodore F. Eggers. By the 1913 City Directory, its listing had been changed from American Fish to Eggers Fish, "Successor to American Fish Co." Mr. Eggers remained as president/manager. The group of people in front of the store are probably employees. The horse-drawn cart was probably used for deliveries.

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor celebrated its grand opening on May 21, 1974, with dignitaries enjoying a bite of red licorice instead of the traditional red ribbon snipping. Located in the west end portion of the Tacoma Mall, Farrell's offered delicious hamburgers and other delicacies as well as mountains of ice creams in many flavors. It was an old fashioned ice cream parlor, believed to be the 84th in a large chain. Food was not served sedately but with much horn blowing and drum beating, especially for soon-to-be popular birthday parties. Color photograph ordered by Gerber Advertising, Portland.
