Mode O' Day was a ladies clothing store that was established in 1930 in Southern California. By the 1960's there were more than 800 Mode O' Day stores throughout the United States. Tacoma always had one of the largest shops and later became the largest Mode O' Day in 1965. Mode O' Day offered a wide selection of fashion apparel and accessories for women of all ages. Exterior view of shop and window displays featuring frocks and hosiery is how Mode O' Day appeared in March of 1947 while still on Broadway. TPL-9093

Mode O' Day had a large selection of women's clothing and lingerie. In 1965 they moved to the Tacoma Mall, along with J. C. Penney's, Lerners and many other stores. At the time of this March of 1947 photograph, however, they were located downtown at 1109 Broadway. This is an interior view of shop, racks filled with women's clothing, lingerie behind the sales counter. Three large floral arrangements possibly indicate that sales ladies and store management are awaiting the grand opening or an anniversary sales event.

In March of 1947, the F.S. Harmon Manufacturing Company was finalizing plans to modernize and expand their furniture manufacturing facility and showroom at 1938 Pacific Avenue. F.S. Harmon was the sole northwest concern holding a franchise to manufacture "Serta" mattresses and springs. They employed over 500 woodworkers and upholsterers who built dinette sets, bedroom suites, desks, tables, bed divans and upholstered chairs. The company closed their plant and showroom on Pacific Avenue in 1960. In the late 1990s the first floor of this building was converted to commercial space, including the Harmon Brewing Co., and the upper floors were converted into loft apartments. (T. Central Lutheran Church was founded in 1925, the church was an active member of the Tacoma community, during World War II they set up a Lutheran Center for Servicemen. They were expecting a large turnout for this year's Easter Services. The laundry industry in Tacoma grew during World War II, and continued to grow during the post war era, they offered union jobs and employment security. Benbow Lakes Resort was located on Mountain Highway between Tacoma and Mount Rainier in Pierce County. They had five hundred acres and five lakes and advertised that they offered "Nature's Wonderland". Benbow Lakes was a family resort, providing fun, recreation and relaxation to everyone. Benbow Lakes Resort advertised "No Mosquitoes" in a 1930 advertisement. They were a family resort with a large inn and also offered individual cottages, all located besides a lake. Younglove Grocery Company was founded by E. A. Younglove in 1907. In 1935 they moved into a new more spacious location, at this location they were better equipped to handle the grocery wholesale demands in this area. The Tacoma Philharmonic Orchestra performed four times at the Temple Theatre. They had a special performance with two local pianists, Lennard Anderson and Herbert Horn. Pantorium Cleaners & Dyers at 3306 Tacoma Avenue South was one of five dry cleaning and laundry services operated by the Home Service Laundry Company. Pantorium had domestic and commercial accounts throughout Tacoma. Besides apparel , the laundry specialized in cleaning drapes, curtains, carpets, rugs and upholstery. Door-to-door service was available. People are unidentified.

Jackson Hall was dedicated during ceremonies in May 1947. A view of the student lounge. A grand piano is on the left.
