The "Shriners" were founded in 1872 as a fun fraternal organization for men who had completed their requirements in the Scottish or Knights Templar (York rite) Masonic organizations. Model of salmon weir set up at Everett, Washington in June of 1932 by Jerry Dominick. Mr. Dominick was Snoqualmie born, but was a long time resident of the Muckleshoot reservation. Afifi Temple Arab Patrol, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine. Group of men in Masonic costumes on steps of the Masonic Temple. This circa 1932 group photo has been superimposed against a background of Mount Rainier. The "Shriners" were founded in 1872 as a fun fraternal organization for men who had completed their requirements in the Scottish or Knights Templar (York rite) Masonic organizations.

Battery "D," 148th Field Artillery, Washington National Guard encampment "Camp Hoffman," in June of 1932. Guardsmen are posed with a piece of artillery labeled "Donut Dunker." Members of the 148th Field Artillery from Tacoma, 146th Field Artillery from Seattle, 161st Infantry from Spokane plus flying, ambulance, cavalry and tank units amassed at Camp Murray from June 16-30, 1932, for the annual field training. Each year the encampment was named after a different individual; in 1932 it was the "Camp Edward D. Hoffman," in honor of the Tacoma flier who died in service in the mountains of California a few months before. Col. Carlos Pennington was in command of the 148th F.A. On July 23, 1932 Shriners from throughout the Pacific Northwest, wearing their colorful and distinctive uniforms, marched in formation up Broadway and through the business district of Tacoma. Bands from the Afifi Shriners of Tacoma and the Gizeh Shriners of Victoria, B.C. took part. After a full day of activities in Tacoma, including a band concert in the Stadium Bowl, a large contingent boarded a chartered train at Union Station. They left at 12:30 in the morning on Sunday July 24th for the imperial council to be held in San Francisco the following week. (The tall, twelve story building at the top, center of the photograph is the Fidelity Building, 949-55 Broadway; it was torn down to build the Woolworth Building). TPL-3687

Copy of customer print. Ben Cheney sent a photograph of himself to his parents at the Cheney Studio, possibly printed on a postcard, as he posed in the streets of Nanking, China, in 1932. Mr. Cheney, hat in hand, stands in front of two majestic buildings. As his note reads, Nanking was the capital of China. Located in eastern China and centuries old, Nanking (or Nanjing) became capital twice, first under Chiang Kai-Shek and then, after WWII, as the capital of the Republic of China. Date on the postcard is 8-22-32; copy of print was ordered on 9-30-61 by Cheney Lumber Co.

The Northwest regional rifle and pistol competition was held during Fleet Week. More than 250 marksmen entered the three-day Northwest Regional Rifle and Pistol competition at Fort Lewis held during Fleet Week. This is what 9th & Broadway looked like in the late afternoon of September 20, 1932, as throngs strain to catch a glimpse of Presidential candidate Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The Democratic candidate's open vehicle is led and followed by motorcycle police. Mr. Roosevelt, the governor of New York, had just concluded a speech to thousands at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. His motorcade arrived in Tacoma about a half-hour earlier than expected so hundreds missed their chance to see him swing through the streets of downtown Tacoma.
