LeRoy Jewelers- interior. Recessed lighting adds to the air of quiet elegance located in LeRoy Jewelers' new store at 919 Broadway. This May 26, 1966, photograph was taken when the store was closed to customers. Glassed cherry cabinets of watches and jewelry line the walls on the left; fine china and other home essentials are displayed on the right. Walnut paneling blended with colonial blue interior walls. Charter Metropolitan buses parked along the 700 block of Commerce St. on May 21, 1966. The four buses were packed with folks heading for the Judson Park retirement complex open house in Zenith. Three can-can dancers in fishnets, ruffles and plumes, entertain at Steve's Gay '90s in May, 1966. They included Connie and Callie Mernaugh. Steve's, a South Tacoma fixture for decades, offered good food and entertainment at very reasonable prices. Floor shows, including the above dancers and rollicking piano tunes, were suitable for the entire family. The Jim Oglesby combo looks up in a May 4, 1966, photograph taken at the Winthrop Hotel where the group was performing. The clean-cut group was dressed in suits with narrow lapels and skinny ties, a look popularized by the Beatles' first appearance in America. Two-story wood-sided home built on sloping lot located in Oakbrook subdivision, 1966. This home at 7812 Emerald Dr. S.W. came equipped with second-story deck and patio beneath and would enjoy the cool shade of many fir trees. A young Andrew Mitchell peers over the solid wall separating the property from its neighbors. Oakbrook enjoyed a large private park with Olympic-sized swimming pool and tennis courts. Coming soon would be the Oakbrook Golf & Country Club. The subdivision was located five minutes from the Lakewood Center/Villa Plaza shopping centers and only 15 minutes from downtown Tacoma. The splashing waters of the George Tsutakawa-designed fountain in the courtyard of the Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association building add to the serenity unexpectedly located in the urban setting of downtown Tacoma. Benches, trees and shrubs were strategically placed so that customers and passersby could enjoy restful moments. On this May 2, 1966, date two flags are prominently displayed above the courtyard: a Washington State flag and the American flag. View was taken from the Commerce St. entrance. Dance at Annie Wright Seminary. Annie Wright students and their dates clasp hands and parade in circles under flower garlands during their Junior Prom on April 30, 1966. This is possibly the "Grand March." The girls are dressed in long evening gowns with many wearing elbow-length gloves. The boys have tuxes or suits; all seem to have flower boutonnieres. On a sunny April day in 1966, an unidentified cowpoke, arms akimbo, was ready for action on the cement driveway in front of one of the new houses in the Heritage West housing development. Wearing a large (toy) pistol, he is standing near a sign indicating septic tanks were prohibited in the Heritage West neighborhood of homes. Presumably modern sewer lines were being installed. This little boy was used in a Heritage West ad, sans background, in the May 6, 1966, News Tribune. Heritage West was a development of new homes ten minutes northeast of Tacoma that was developed by Evergreen Builders of Tacoma. Night exposure of LeRoy Jewelers- facade and merchandise displays. Established in 1941 by Irving Farber and Jack Slotnick in the Fidelity Building at 11th & Broadway, LeRoy Jewelers was known as the "Diamond Store of Tacoma." After the Fidelity Building was torn down in 1949, the store relocated to 1132 Broadway. After Irving Farber's death in 1965, Hazel Farber moved the business to 919 Broadway and reopened in May, 1966. Display windows facing the street are full of valuable merchandise, including rings and watches. Customers could peek into the store through the glass entryway below the large electric sign. The outside of the store was finished in white marbelique flecked with gold dust. There were bands of gold anodyzed aluminum against white stucco. Photograph ordered by LeRoy Jewelers. Broadside view of the "Connie Jean" undergoing sea trials on April 20, 1966. The 150-foot tuna seiner was built by Martinac Shipbuilding and launched in December, 1965. She is the sister-ship of the "Eastern Pacific" also built by Martinac. The "Connie Jean" will be used in the San Pedro area. She has a frozen fish capacity of 530 tons and carries a crew of 14. The fishing vessel, "Connie Jean," undergoes sea trials on April 20, 1966. Her prow carves a path through the quiet waters of Commencement Bay. The tuna seiner was built by Martinac Shipbuilding. She is under the command of Capt. Eugene Cabral of San Diego and will carry a crew of 14. The "Connie Jean," named after the captain's daughter, has a frozen fish capacity of 530 tons. "Ed," an employee of Precision Machine Works, observes the three drills of a piece of machinery at work on April 5, 1966. The area surrounding the machine is filled with shredded pieces of woodchip-like material. Precision Machine Works had moved to a new 11,000 square foot building at 2101 Pacific Ave. in September, 1965. They manufactured precision parts for the aerospace industry and counted Boeing as one of their large customers. Photograph ordered by Precision Machine Works.

The aerial view is northwest to southeast, taken from about the I-5/Highway 18 intersection. Lake Tapps is large body of water in mid-photo. Nearby is the White/Stuck River at the foot of the hills lined with trees. The southern portion of the city of Auburn is on the left side of the photograph. The large complex of warehouse-styled buildings in the foreground is a Boeing plant.

Heavy smoke identifies the location of St. Regis towards the left side of photo, next to the Puyallup Waterway. Among various nearby waterways is the Port Industrial Waterway (center) which was being extended. Interstate 5 is freeway running left to right near the bottom of the photograph. At the end of 1965 the freeway ran from the Oregon border through Tacoma to Midway.

This aerial view of Tacoma's business district and industrial tideflats was taken on April 5, 1966 - forty years ago. From high above the city some familiar landmarks, such as the 11th Street Bridge (now the Murray Morgan Bridge) and the channelized Puyallup River, are easy to pick out. Heavy smoke billows from the St. Regis Paper Company plant (now Simpson Tacoma Kraft) which is flanked by the Puyallup Waterway and the St. Paul Waterway. Missing are the new 509 cable-stay bridge spanning the Thea Foss Waterway and I-705.

Gerrit VanderEnde, Chairman of the Board of Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Assn., paid a visit to the Cheney Art Woodcarving firm, 5625 So. Adams St., on March 31, 1966. Here he was shown a series of carved wood panels depicting "Money & Barter Through the Ages" from caveman days onward. Pointing to the mural is Winston Coy, interior designer. Standing behind Mr. VanderEnde and Mr. Coy is Arthur McKellips, Tacoma sculptor responsible for the wood mural. Cheney Art Woodcarving was owned by lumberman Ben Cheney. Gerrit VanderEnde, Chairman of the Board of Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association, gently fingers the wood carvings set in the "Money & Barter Through the Ages" display located at the Cheney Art Woodcarving Co., 5625 So. Adams, on March 31, 1966. The carvings can also be seen at A147874-9. They appear to focus on early America, incorporating business with family and military life. There were a total of 36 panels depicting the invention and development of money as a medium of exchange. Other panels, not shown above, portrayed scenes from ancient cultures and their use of money. The wood murals would be on display at the Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association's home office in downtown Tacoma through May 31, 1966. Many are wearing their school's uniforms. Also in attendance at the Elks weekly meeting were representatives from the schools' wrestling, baseball and track teams and coaches. Flanking the students are many prominent Elks including H.A. Wollen, Exalted Ruler.
