Pacific Lutheran College dedicated their new gymnasium in 1947. This gymnasium was built after their original gymnasium was destroyed in a fire. Margie Joy Miller, the daughter of George W. and Eunice Miller, was starring in the Little Theater play "Janie" at this time. She was described by critics as a potential Janis Paige. Margie (also spelled Marjie), after graduating from Stephens College, would embark on an acting career in the fifties as Marjie Millar. This photograph of Marjie Joy Miller appeared in the Tacoma Times on January 17, 1948 while she was appearing in the Tacoma Little Theater production of "Janie". Praised by a local critic as the next Janis Paige, she went on to have a career as a dancer and actress under the name Marjie Millar. She starred with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in "Money from Home" and played Ray Bolger's girlfriend in the TV series "Where's Raymond". Lumber Grappel being made for Weyerhauser Timber Company, Star Iron and Steel, George Buckingham. This lumber grapple was built to be operated by one man. It could run on direct or alternating current. It handled 7 1/2 tons of packaged lumber, to be picked up in any position and placed exactly where required. Leslie E. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. This photograph of the interior of Visitation Church, 3318 So. 58th St., was taken on January 22, 1948. The sanctuary is filled with scaffolding to the top of the interior arches to make it ready for painting. Two unidentified man at the left watch as workmen from the Safway Steel Scaffolding Company build the complicated gridwork. The church was founded in 1892 and this building was dedicated in 1913. The architect was C. Frank Mahon. The churches stained glass windows are visible on both sides of the pews.

A line-up of eight Dodge dump trucks are ready to haul away extra fill from the construction site of the new Irwin Jones facility. A bulldozer stands behind the trucks and a crane is busy with its scoop, ready to fill another truck.
Big Bear Food Store, Bud Merrell, Grocery store interiors, old "Arney's Market", Colemans. Big Bear opened its first Tacoma location January 30, 1948. They had seven distinct departments under one roof. With five check stands they hoped to give the speediest service ever offered to Tacoma shoppers. Big Bear was well known in Seattle having had several locations there for 16 years. Their policy was, "to provide the foods you want at the lowest prices at which they can be sold". This view features the produce area with displays of fruits, vegetagles and fresh flowers. Dairy products are displayed in the cold cases in the back of the store. The station has two pumps at the island in front and two automobiles are in the bays, one up on a rack. One of the attendants is looking out at the street and another is checking the front tire of one of the automobiles.

Crane in shop for Times annual edition, Star Iron & Steel, Mr. Anderson. Star Iron and Steel had just completed this Gantry crane for the Bureau of Reclamation. It had a capacity of 13 1/2 tons and a total lift of 222 feet. The crane was to be used to handle the bulkhead gates at the Marshall Ford Dam, Colorado River Project, Texas. A similar crane, with 325 ton capacity, was being built at this time for the Davis Dam on the Colorado River. (T.Times, 2/26/1948, p.32)
