Eighteen members of the Samuel L. Salter family, representing four generations of Salters, gathered at the family home in Tacoma, 307 So. 31st St., in February of 1944, to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Samuel L. and Jennie E. Salter. Mr. & Mrs. Salter were married on February 27, 1894 in Olean, N.Y. They moved west in 1905 and settled in Tacoma in November of that year. Mr. Salter, a self-employed contractor, who helped build Lincoln H.S. and the original buildings at Fort Lewis, died in February of 1978 at the age of 102.

Two vehicles are stopped at the pumps; one has its trunk open and the other is having gas pumped in by an attendant. Maxwell was known for its very modern gasoline outlets. TPL-8459

First Methodist Choir in Concert. The First Methodist Choir will be having its Easter season concert in the church sanctuary this weekend. Choir director is Mr. Fritz Berntsen, with Ms. Ruth Johnson as the choir soloist and Mr. David Souter as the guest artist from the Bremerton Symphony (names listed in T. Times, 4/1/44, p. 5).

Built by Major Edward Bowes in 1908, the Bowes Building at 100 So. 9th St. has been home to a number of businesses over the years. Before 1920 it was occupied by the Pacific Building & Loan Association, and M. Schmidt & Son Merchant Tailors. In May of 1920, it was purchased by, and became home to, the Tacoma Savings and Loan. Major Bowes became nationally known for the "Amateur Hour" radio program. In the early 1990s the Bowes Building was home to the Pacific Rim Restaurant, and is currently occupied by the Comedy Underground. (TNT, 12/11/1945) TPL-803

Tacoma General Nurse's capping. Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing was the first to be established in Washington state as fully accredited by state board of nurse examiners. Here we see U.S. cadet nurses at their capping ceremony.

ca. 1944. Home portrait of Samuel L. and Jennie E. Salter. Mr. Salter is perched on an upholstered chair next to his wife in this ca. 1944 photograph. There is a carnation boutonniere in the lapel of Mr. Salter's suit while his wife has a large corsage pinned to her dark dress. In 1944 the Salters celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the family residence on S. 31st St. An open house was held on February 27th for friends and family. The Salters had made their home in Tacoma since November, 1905, and were the parents of five children. (TNT 2-27-44, B-2)

The Red Cross War Fund Drive opened the first week of March 1944 with a goal double the amount from last year. $398500 is the quota Pierce County intends to meet. West Fork Timber Co. The booming timber and lumber industry in Tacoma was filling military orders and local demands as quickly as they could. Reforestration was an important component of the timber and lumber industry, in order to avoid future shortages. In September of 1944, Sterling B. "Bud" MacDonald received the Les Weisfield Trophy from the Washington State Sports Council for "doing the most good for the benefit of the outdoors". He was named the tenth recipient of the trophy for his outstanding work for the council and on legislative bills in 1943. Bud started working part time for the Tacoma Sportsman's Association in 1936 while he was still driving a taxi cab. In 1942 he became the full time Secretary/ Treasurer of the club. For most of his adult life he was a devoted and active member of various conservation organizations in Tacoma/Pierce County. (T. Times, 9/18/44, p. 11).

Mrs. Harry (Marjorie) Cain and Harry Jr. (Buzzie) stand to generous applause from a packed house at a tribute to Mayor Cain at the Temple Theatre on October 2, 1944. Ex-Mayor J.J. Kaufman and wife are at extreme left in photo. Mayor Cain, a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, served in the European theater from 1943-1945. He was not present at this tribute but hundreds of his supporters attended the free two-hour variety show which honored Tacoma's "fighting mayor." Harry P. From left to right, Mrs. Frank Thornburg, Mrs. James E. Stockton, Mrs. Arthur Goldsborough, Mrs. Charles Mojean, and Mrs. Charles Bowers of the Pierce County Red Cross production department worked at wrapping some of the over 4,000 Christmas packages that were given to soldier patients and military personnel at Madigan General Hospital and the McChord Field Station Hospital in December, 1944. The gift program was coordinated through the Pierce and Thurston County chapters of the Red Cross. Over 44,000 items were donated by various clubs and organizations throughout the two county region. The hospital's commanding officers conducted a survey to determine what the men wanted most. Along with others presents, each package contained a book and a pack of cigarettes.
