This cemetery was a division of the Tacoma Cemetery located on South Tacoma Way, both were owned by the Tacoma Cemetery Association. The Parkland Centre was owned by several generations of the Gratias family, starting with building contractor Frank Gratias and followed by wife Peggy and son Ron Gratias. New in 1948, the South Garfield St. building was completely insulated and had hot water throughout. Free parking was available. Tenants included Johnson's Drugs, College Cleaners and Stella's Flowers with apartments believed located on the top level. The Parkland Centre was located near Pacific Lutheran College (now University). (Additional information provided by a reader)

Birchfield Boiler Company was currently working on cutting steel for the construction of a new fishing boat, a 57 foot seiner, "Alaska Limit". Birchfield was expanding their shipbuilding and conversion department. Tacoma Athletic Commission was located on the top levels of the Top of the Ocean restaurant. The club had private facilities and a separate entrance, available to all club members and their guests, many private events were scheduled in this area. The machine is possibly a wood chipping machine or a log debarking machine, Northwest Machine Works building in background. I. W. Tacoma Fire Department has been in existance for many many years, the first paid fire department was established in 1885. Since this time the department has dramatically increased to help meet the needs of the community. In 1944 the Tacoma Fire Department began an extensive modernization program aimed at upgrading its aging fleet of fire fighting equipment. This picture, taken in June of 1948, shows the fire departments impressive collection of trucks lined up along Tacoma Avenue South in front of Station No. 2. The fleet includes 3 Peter Pirsch 1250-GPM Pumpers with aerial all-steel ladders. TPL-10051

Myra Hackney of Clinton, Oklahoma died in San Francisco, California, at the age of 63. Myra was born in Independence, Kansas, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Methodist Church in Clinton. Myra is survived by her daughters and her husband; her body is being brought to Tacoma for services and burial. Washington Curtain Laundry was located at 1209 South K Street (now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Way). The building was built in 1924 by the Walesby Construction Company, it was originally occupied by the Washington Hand Laundry. Exterior view of facilities, sign indicates they also have thrifty wash, rough dry, curtains, rugs, blankets and pillows. The office door has a sign that reads "Please Drop Bundles Off Here", this photo was taken at 4:30 P.M.

In 1948 there were two F. W. Woolworth stores in Tacoma, one at 1106 Pacific Avenue and the other at 1126 Broadway. The store managers were Frederick T. Treichel and James H. McChesney. When that building was demolished in 1914, the new Central School building had already been built two years earlier in 1912 at 601 South 8th Street. One of the busses operated by the Lake Drive Transit Company, owned by Aug Corsini and Archie A. DeCent, picks up riders at the corner of So. 15th and Pacific Ave. in July of 1947. The company's main office was at 801 Pacific Ave. and they maintained a garage at 301 Puyallup Ave. In October 1947, the company was supporting the building of a central bus depot. The building in the background, that was home to the Hotel Savoy, was the Sprague Building, 1511-1541 Pacific. Built in 1888, it was demolished in the 1960s during urban renewal.

Peoples Department Store, built in 1895, began a three year renovation and modernization period starting in 1939. This is how the drapery and curtain department looked like in July of 1948 when Peoples featured a great sale on ruffles, panels and cottage sets for only $1.99. Some curtains are on display and customers also have the convenience of looking through the sale bins to find what they need.

The display features "Kroehler" chairs with frame foundation, back spring unit, shock absorber springs, corner frame foundation, shape retaining seat and steel web platform all "cushionized".
