White aproned bartenders stand behind the counter. The walls are adorned with what appear to be prints of women. As was proper in this more formal time, most of the men are wearing hats. The male only atmosphere allowed the men to drink, smoke and joke more freely. The glass topped cases in the foreground of the picture contain boxes of cigars available for purchase.

ca. 1933. Funland at Point Defiance Park, circa 1933. People wait in line to ride the miniature train ride. The small locomotive is followed a long train of cars filled with people. A shed-type building with curved roof can be seen with a sign reading "Dodgem." This is most likely the location of the Bumper Car ride. This was one of the most popular weekend destinations for Tacomans, as can be seen from the crowds.

ca. 1933. In April of 1933, the first production of 3.2% beer was allowed in the US after the repeal of prohibition. Full strength beer would not be legal until January of 1934. Columbia Brewing Co. used this slight variation on a preprohibition label to introduce their new product, Alt Heidelberg Pale Beer. The brewery's symbol of the female figure "Columbia" was replaced by the Student Prince, from the 1903 play "Alt Heidelberg," later reproduced as the operetta "Student Prince." ca. 1933. Thick crowds gathered to watch a parade going by 9th & Broadway, in front of the Brandt Hotel and Dr. Whetstone's dental practice, in the early 1930s. Sandwiched between marching soldiers and sailors is a small pony ridden by an even smaller boy. A banner entitled "New Deal" is draped over the pony. This may have been taken on the occasion of the (Franklin Delano) Roosevelt Day Parade of April 8, 1933. The big parade through Tacoma's business district was authorized via resolution by Mayor M.G. Tennent and the city council. The parade was to honor President Roosevelt and recognize his leadership in the country's economic crisis. (TNT 4-7-33, p. 1-article)

Lead actors Wallace Beery (1885-1949) and Marie Dressler (1869-1934) are front row, 2nd and 3rd from left. Director Mervyn LeRoy sits next to Miss Dressler; next to him is writer Norman Reilly Raine. Peering over Miss Dressler's shoulder is cameraman, Gregg Toland. The character of "Tugboat Annie" Brennan was said to have been inspired by Thea Foss, who started Foss Launch & Tug with a $5 rowboat. ALBUM 6.

The men would then be free to drink, smoke and make off color remarks and jokes without offending the ladies. Customers pose with one foot on the railing, while white coated bartenders line up behind the bar. Happy Days offered both gents and Ladies service. The tavern was managed by Albert D. Innocenti.

ca. 1933. Full Gospel Tabernacle and Rescue Mission, Evangelist Bertha Mitchell, Pastor in Charge. This is a rare view in the thirties; the church is fully integrated and the minister is a woman. The church group appears to be meeting in a rough basement with exposed beams and pipes and a light bulb hanging down from a wire.

ca. 1933. Crowds gather at Funland, an amusement park, located at Point Defiance and operated by the Point Defiance Amusement Co. One of the most crowded areas of Pt. Defiance Park on a weekend day in 1933 would be Funland, as families purchased tickets to experience the carnival rides. Spectators in the front are viewing the action on a circular track. While in the back is the tall steel structure spinning the Swing ride. Tall light standards each support two distinctive lights and bulb lights are strung between the standards for extra evening illumination.
