Two alcoves at Historical Building, McCormick Room, State Historical Society, Mr. Foster. Mr. and Mrs. William L. McCormick gave this alcove display that honors Isaac I. Stevens, the Washington Territory's first governor, and another alcove, honoring Mr. McCormick's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Laird McCormick, to the State Historical Society. In the center is the desk Isaac I. Stevens used in his office in Olympia made of black walnut. Cases on either side house Stevens' flags, one of which Stevens carried while a general in the northern army in 1865 at the Battle of Chantilly when he lost his life. (TNT, 7/3/1949, p.A-3)

Exterior of store, Burrough's Adding Machine Company. Burrough's had two sales representatives at their Tacoma location, R.F. Spiegle and J.L. Gockel. This exterior view of their commercial outlet shows the facility at night with interior lighting highlighting the most modern in office machines. Tower "4" from west side, Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corp, Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The supporting towers of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge are in place and work has begun on the roadway stringers from the west side. Large steel I-beams are shown. John A. Roebling's Sons Co. engineers projected that catwalk cables from the west anchorage to the west tower would be hoisted within a few days. Mount Rainier stands majestically in the background. The two towers for the second Tacoma Narrows Bridge are securely in place at the narrowest portion of Puget Sound in June of 1949 while Mount Rainier and her snowy cap are seen on the horizon. Engineers would pass another milestone in the construction of the suspension bridge later in June when Foss Tug No. 11 pulled the first line from the east anchorage to the east tower. An exterior view of the very modern automobile showroom built by Mueller-Harkins showing the two circular display windows that each contained a revolving stage for the newest models of Buick automobiles. The large, monolithic tower displaying the name "Buick" in neon on top has recently been completed. The sign for the Walker Apartment Hotel can be seen on the far left, across Saint Helens Avenue.

The Elks Club Band and their majorette, Gloria Ellexson, posed next to the Elks Temple before leaving for Cleveland, Ohio, in July of 1949 for the Elks National Convention. The band, under the direction of L.R. Grass, had been the 1948 state champions and Miss Ellexson was the state champion majorette. The band performed at the convention in Ohio, and Gloria, a student at the College of Puget Sound, was named the 1949 National Champion Drum Majorette. (TNT, 7/6/1949, p.10)

Ranch home at Interlaaken, Karl H. Kaman contractor. An exterior view of the one-story home with dormers that has recently been resurfaced with "Perma-stone". Possibly the Rothwell residence. Perma-Stone was an enduring material, cast with molds on walls of wood, brick, block, stucco or tile, new or old construction.

Brew kettles, Columbia Breweries, Davis. An employee adds hops to the large copper brew kettle used to boil the wort, one of the early stages of beermaking. The kettle is fitted with a curved cap with a large tube that filters the evaporation coming from the kettle. The brewery owned two of the kettles that had a capacity of 330 barrels each. Anders W. Erikson was the brew master in 1948.

In 1947 Rose and Arthur Hertz opened their first hat shop in Tacoma in a small room in the Fidelity Building. In 1949 they expanded when they opened Rose Millinery at 313 South 9th Street across the street from the Rialto Theater. This photograph of that store, with its large display windows, was taken in July of 1949. The new shop had two large showrooms, the Mirror room and the French room, and two workrooms that gave ample space for designing and remodeling hats. Rose had already been in the millinery business for twenty years when she moved to Tacoma with her husband Arthur, most of this time as a designer. Rose, widely known as "Rose the Milliner", retired in 1970.

Interior of home at 3004 No. Huson, Briggs Construction Company. A new kitchen with all new electric appliances: a range on the right, a refrigerator on the left and a washer or dryer seen through the doorway into the laundry area. There's even room for a small table on wheels in the corner. A decorative strip of a curtain is seen around the window over the gleaming white sink. Briggs Construction Company had recently completed 102 homes in the Fairmount Park and Parkland Additions. (TNT, 8/7/1949, p.A-13)
