Mrs. Anniki Maria Hokanson had her photograph taken for her 105th birthday with her great-grandson, 11 year old Edward Escene, and her pet cat Niggie in July of 1935. Mrs. Hokanson, a native of Sweden, was still active at her advanced years and attributed her long life to hard work and interest in her friends. Unsure of her exact birthdate, she celebrated her 105 years on August 2nd. She lived alone in her own cottage on McEachron Road near Summit View. Her husband died when their youngest child was 7 months old and she raised 10 children by herself. Despite her 73 years in the US, she never learned English, preferring to converse in her native Swedish tongue. Mrs. Hokanson came to the U.S. in 1862 and originally resided in Montana. She lived in Pierce County for 35 years and was a member of the Central Lutheran Church. She died January 13, 1936 and her obituary listed her age as 104. (TDL 7/31/1935, pg.1- refers to her as Mrs. Anna Hoganson) (T. Times 7/31/1935, pg. 1- refers to her as Mrs. Anna Maria Hokenson, T. Times 1/13/1936, pg. 1 Mrs. Anniki Maria Hokanson) TPL-8293, photograph also numbered T3 image 2

In July of 1935, Mrs. F.D. Snyder, brush in hand, painted an artistic scene at the Naval Ammunition Depot while a guest from Kansas, Miss Pearl Snyder, looked on. Mrs. Snyder, wife of a pharmacist stationed at the depot, was painting her vision of the officers' quarters at the new Naval Ammunition Depot entrance on the Kitsap Lake Highway. The buildings were constructed by CCC workers in 1934 and were made of highly polished fir, inside and out. Mrs. Snyder, formerly a professional artist, now paints as a hobby only, devoting herself to raising her children "correctly." (Bremerton Sun, 08-08-1935, pg. 1)

On July 26, 1935 close to 100 of the finest power boats in the Pacific Northwest left Tacoma for Nanaimo, B.C. in the 8th annual international cruiser classic. Known as the "Capital to Capital" race, most of the previous competitions had been on courses charted from Olympia to Juneau or from Olympia to Victoria. The 1935 race started at the municipal dock in Tacoma, under the 11th Street Bridge, and threaded a course of 150 nautical miles through Puget Sound, and the San Juan and British Columbia Islands. Crews got very little sleep as the boats raced throughout the night and into the next day. Vessels could choose their own departure time, basing the time they calculated they would reach certain spots. Contestants did not stop at the control points along the course; they had to pass close enough to each point, however, to be identified. (T.Times 7/25-27, 1935 & 7/29/1935, pg. 1)

In July of 1935, Reed Harris, the bartender at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, was photographed while mixing a drink in a silver shaker, surrounded by millions of dollars of stock certificates. In a unique decorating twist, the walls of the barroom at the club were papered with 8 million dollars worth of old stock certificates donated by 100 different members. About 80% of the "securities" were issued by Tacoma ventures that did not pan out; 10% represent Northwest business ventures and the remaining 10% ventures promoted by Tacomans in different locations. The value of the certificates was unknown, but was less than the face value. The decorating idea was the brainchild of club president Harry K. Todd, who donated many of the certificates himself. In July of 1935, George Black, also known as George Thomas Ennis-Black, was photographed inspecting several tall Japanese iris in the garden of his home, which also served as his nursery. In 1927, Mr. Black bought a small parcel of prairie just a few hundred feet from Park Lodge School in the Park Lodge district of Lakewood near Gravelly Lake. The land turned out to be an ancient creek bed and the soil was a rich dark sandy loam to a depth of 3-4 feet, without the regular rocks and pebbles. By 1935, Mr. Black was growing plants of all kinds, including over 100 varieties of iris from all over the world, at his nursery. According to his family, Mr. Black was born in Wilmington, Delaware on November 29, 1891 and passed away at the VA Hospital in Spokane on August 20, 1960. (T.
