The Veterans of Foreign wars were wrapping up four days of meetings after having a successful convention, with a parade through downtown Tacoma. More than 3,000 delegates and members of the women's auxiliary from Washington State, and 2,000 marchers, representing other organizations would participate. National Blower and Sheet Metal Company was doing the roofing, providing all the sheet metal work, installing the ventilation system and furnishing all structural and miscellaneous iron for the Tacoma Vocational School. The company was established in 1889 and currently employs fifty workers. Exterior of house at present state, Wollander Far West Homes, W.A. Wollander. Site construction of this prefabricated home was begun January 22, 1948 (see Richard's collection series #D31,563). The windows, doors and roof have been installed. The chimney is complete. Frames are in place for a concrete front step. The landscaping has not been finished.

Exterior view of house with beautiful windows, concrete foundation ensures durability, made by Holroyd Company, manufacturers of the finest building materials in Tacoma. Holroyd Company was owned by James A. Holroyd and Alma M. Miller. The company manufactured all types of building materials, including: sand, gravel, concrete blocks, bricks and many other masonry products; they advertised "Dependable Building Materials".

Wollander Far-West Homes. The exterior wall units are being selected from the prefabricated sections just delivered to the work site. There are at least six construction workers working on this aspect of the construction. Two men wearing hats and topcoats are looking on while one unit is moved down from the stack.

Wollander Far-West Homes. The roof trusses are being added to this nearly finished construction of a prefabricated home. It was said that one of these homes could be completed in one-day. This model has an attached one-car garage.

Wollander Far-West Homes. A truck is delivering the components of this prefabricated house. The foundation has already been laid and workers are stacking the newly delivered materials in the middle of the subflooring for the new home. Trusses are ready to be unloaded from the truck. They are nearly the first thing off the truck since they will be almost the last thing added to the house.

Wollander Far-West Homes. Willard A. Wollander was the owner of Wollander Better Buildier Plans and Wollander Far-West Homes. The third exterior wall units of the prefabricated house are being added to the foundation. Four men are moving this section, which already has the door opening in it, to the edge of the foundation and will angle it up into place. Window openings are already in place on the opposite wall.

Tacoma Transit was about to begin building new facilities, a bus transit center to be located on South Sprague Avenue between South 12th Street and South 15th Street, across from the athletic park. They had also ordered new buses, giving them a 120 unit fleet, Tacoma Transit had an increase in the usage of their transportation. Tacoma Transit had ordered 85 new buses to accommodate larger numbers of bus riders. The new modern buses would join 35 buses bought in 1941 and 1942, making it a 120 unit fleet. The new buses were either 40 passenger or 34 passenger capacity buses. View of A Street and South 9th Street, Bowes Building (foreground) houses the Tacoma Savings and Loan and the Savage-Scofield Building houses the Tacoma Hotel. The Bowes Building was built in 1908 in Italian Renaissance style, Heath and Twichell were the architects. The Savage-Scofield building was also built in 1908 by the same architects. The main building was destroyed by a fire in 1935. Photo was ordered by March & Smith real estate agency.

Home of Dora B. (Mrs. Percy C.) Smith, Times Society, Mrs. MacDonald. A group of society women gather outside Mrs. Smith's large, two-storied home. The porch has large columns with a balcony over the porch. The exterior of the house is clapboards painted white. The group met to define organization plans for the newly formed auxiliary to the Dixie Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The president of Dixie, Mrs. Edwin Keyes, appointed officers. L-R, seated: Mrs. Richard L. Smith, Vice Chairman; Mrs. Richmond Higy, Chairman; Frances M. (Mrs. Charles Q.) Residence and grounds at Wayne W. and Bernice Keyes home in the Lakes District. Mr. and Mrs. Keyes are standing in their front yard with two of their dogs. The mansion was originally built for Charles A. Foster and was called "Sunnybank" until purchased by the Keyes' in 1936. It was then referred to as the Keyes Mansion.

Montgomery Ward Company. This is a brick, three-storied building. A fire engine/ladder truck, an automobile and a delivery truck are on the street. The milk delivery man is seen arranging items in the truck. The store front had been the location of the Porter-Cummings Company. Murphy's Cafe-Tavern is on one side and Sharman Books is on the other. Modern Display Service is advertised on the third floor windows. TPL-2534
