The Tacoma Safety Council's "Horror Parade," also called the Safety Show parade. The parade was intended as a macabre reminder of the fruits of careless and reckless driving. The first prize winner was this wrecked automobile in tow with a person portraying an accident victim laying across seat with a sign saying, "Oh Why ! Didn't I Get My Brakes Repaired Yesterday?" (T. The Tacoma Safety Council "Safety Show Parade", also called the "Horror Parade," wound through the streets of Tacoma on Saturday, February 27, 1937. The float sponsored by the Tacoma General Hospital featured two nurses attending a man in traction on the back of a flatbed truck. This group of children watched the parade from the sidewalk across the street from an unidentified Tacoma school. The parade travelled through the major streets of Tacoma for two hours warning parade viewers about the horrors of reckless driving. Another float in the parade showed a body hanging out of the passenger side of a badly damaged car. (T. Times 2/26/1937, pg. 1)

The second annual Tacoma Fairyland and Christmas Parade was held on November 29, 1935. This tall Mother Goose figure with her billowing blue hoop skirt was actually a float. She was so tall that she could nod to the spectators in the second floor windows of the buildings she passed. Several clown characters stand to one side, one wearing a huge "grotesque" head mask. Behind the clowns is a float with Humpty Dumpty and some of the Kings Men. This parade was the kick off for the Christmas toy shopping season. The 1936 Toyland Parade kicks off the day after Thanksgiving in a dense fog. The parade celebrates the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. The second annual Fairyland and Christmas Parade, November 29, 1935. Float with Santa in sleigh pulled by pure white reindeer in front of Brandes-Madsen Co. on Broadway. Santa will be preceded by two boys carrying a sign proclaiming "Santa from the North Pole." Santa's float is flanked by dancing letter blocks that spell TOYS. Following Santa is the float with the Three Wise Men on camels. The parade took place on the day after Thanksgiving on a route that covered Broadway and Pacific Ave. from 7th - 13th streets. Riding in a white, toy filled sleigh pulled by two snow white reindeer, Santa Claus rode on the first float in the second annual Fairyland and Christmas Parade, November 29, 1935. Sponsored by merchants on Broadway and Pacific Avenues, the parade took place the day after Thanksgiving and kicked off the Christmas shopping season in Tacoma. (T. Fairyland and Christmas parade, November 29, 1935. Marching band in front of the Elks' Temple on Broadway. Three marching bands were scheduled in the parade, the Musicians' Union band, Stadium High School and Lincoln High School. This is most probably the Musicians' Union Band that was scheduled to start off the parade, accompanying Santa Claus. ca. 1925. A number of men in costumes and makeup suggesting clowns pose on a truck and one or two automobiles that have been decorated as floats. Over it all is suspended a giant straw hat on a pole. The floats are possibly part of the Straw Hat Day celebrations, the day when gentlemen officially put away their winter hats in favor of straw summer hats. The group is posed in front of a billboard. Review of troops at Fort Lewis for Governor Langlie. The new Governor of Washington would be reviewing the 3,200 selectees of the 3rd Division, accompanied by tanks and vehicles. The afternoon would be spent in close inspection of artillery.

The Sixth Annual Daffodil Parade was held April 1, 1939. The "Spirit of Electricity" float, possibly entered by the City Light Department, was captured on film as it moved past the Riviera Theatre followed by marching band. This horse drawn buggy emphasizes the frivolity of the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. Instead of being pulled by a horse, the buggy is hitched up to two people in a mule costume. The driver calmly observes the crowd shading himself with his parasol, leg dangling over the side of the conveyance. He is accompanied by two boys, one of whom is looking over the back at the following drill team. The flag bearer for the drill team marches beside the buggy.

This horse drawn wagon draped at the sides with evergreen boughs was entered in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the Defiance Lumber Co. The men on the platform are involved in some pioneer wood cutting techniques. In the center, one man hacks at the log with an axe, while another man sits atop cutting with a saw. A motorcycle with a side car rides along the side of the wagon. Defiance Lumber was located at 4601 Ruston Way . Lee L. Doud was president.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. Fisher's Flouring Mills, maker of Fisher Blend Flour, contributed this delectable layered float featuring a three layer anniversary cake, complete with candles, for Washington State's fifty years of "progress," 1889-1939. Several young women in long white dresses with puffed sleeves ride on the float. Fisher Flouring Mills Co. was located at 1153 Dock St.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. This decorated truck is the parade entry from Adams County. This county in southeastern Washington was established by the Territorial Legislature on November 28, 1883, from a portion of Whitman County. Wheat, cattle, and sheep are the major products of the county's 1,895 square miles. It was named for John Adams, first vice president of the United States and the second president. The truck pulls a wagon bearing a model of a farm. A girl in a white or pastel spring dress is perched on the hood, holding a parasol.

This float celebrating the Narrows Bridge, under construction at this time, was prepared for the Washington Golden Jubilee Parade, July 22, 1939, by Pierce County. Model of bridge, driver in 10 gallon hat, man in Native garb and headdress smoking a "peace pipe" and woman in swimwear. Spectators watch from curb and from windows of Luzon and Baker Buildings at 13th and Pacific. Thousands of Tacomans lined the street and buildings of downtown Tacoma to view the three-hour parade. The Construction Council of Tacoma entered this float in the Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939. The float bears a model of what is possibly the Exposition Hall, 1616-32 E. 26th, opened in 1940. The wording over the door of the model says simply "Washington." The driver's head and steering wheel can be seen directly in front of the model. The parade was celebrating fifty years of Washington statehood. Several people can be seen in the crowd wearing their "Jubilee Hats."

Twenty of the counties in Washington State entered a float in the Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, held in Tacoma. This one was entered by Chelan County. Golden Jubilee Parade, Tacoma City Light float, on July 22, 1939. The theme of the City Light float was Arabian Nights. Shaub-Ellison Co., dealers for Goodyear tires, entered this float in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. The parade was celebrating the fifty year anniversary of Washington's statehood. A little girl rides in front holding an oar in one hand and waving with the other. In the back is a large Goodyear tire with a child riding inside. Shaub-Ellison was located at 1902 Pacific Ave. In 1939, the company was owned by Roe E. Shaub and Charles Ellison Jr.

A part of Tacoma's and our nation's past came rolling down Pacific Avenue on July 22, 1939, during the Golden Jubilee Parade. A man and woman dressed in vintage clothing drive a 1906 Model "N" Ford owned by Titus Ford. There is barely enough room for two. A sign on the Ford's roof reads, "50 Year Club." The driver of the car is Dick Frayne, superintendent of Titus Ford Service Department.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. Griffin Fuel Co., founded in 1889 by Fred Griffin, participates with a horse drawn wagon decked with a flag and bunting. The wagon also has a sign stating "There's no fuel like an old fuel." The company located at 1910-30 Commerce was also celebrating their fifty year anniversary in the fuel business.
