In honor of Navy Day, October 27, 1936, the crews of the USS Salt Lake City, Colorado and Texas competed in a whaleboat race in the waters of the Puget Sound at the Bremerton Naval Yard. The Salt Lake City finished a length and one half before its nearest competitor, clinching the Bremerton Sun trophy. (Bremerton Sun 10/28/1936, pg. 1).

On October 27, 1936, a huge celebration was held at the Bremerton Navy Yard in honor of National Navy Day. Exhibits were set up in each department of the yard to demonstrate to the public the work performed there. In this photograph, two marines are kneeling beside a pup tent. Over 10,000 people crowded into the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton on October 27, 1936 to witness the various exhibits celebrating Navy Day. Mrs. Elmer Moen admired the many medals awarded to Platoon Sergeant C.J. Anderson, a Marine stationed at the barracks in the yard. The medals demonstrated his proficiency as a marksman. He was part of the US Marine Corps team which recently won the national rifle team match. (Bremerton Sun 10/28/1936, pg. 1)

Four misses from Bremerton High School demonstrated the size of the stack that will adorn the destroyer USS Jarvis, under construction, during the October 27, 1936 festivities celebrating Navy Day at the Bremerton Naval Yard. The girls were standing inside the outer casing of the stack, made of stainless steel in the boiler shop at the yard. Pictured left to right are Jean Devaney, Jeanne Haugen, Pauline Montain and Mary Jane Arthun. The girls were visiting the large modern boiler shop, open to the public during the festivities. In October of 1936, members of the Scandinavian-American Democratic Club rallied for their party's candidates in the upcoming local and national elections. Portraits and signs for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Clarence Martin line the walls. Both men were seeking re-election, Roosevelt for the presidency and Martin for Washington State governor. The rally was held at Valhalla Hall on October 14, 1936, with the general public invited. Initiatives and amendments on the general election ballot were discussed. In honor of Navy Day, October 27, 1936, an engineer's whaleboat race was held at the Bremerton Navy Yard. Competing for the win were crews from the USS Salt Lake City, Colorado and Texas. One of the crews was photographed in their whaleboat with oars up prior to the starter's whistle. The race was won by the crew from the Salt Lake City, who claimed the Bremerton Sun trophy for the race. (Bremerton Sun 10/28/1936, pg. 1).

Charter No. 10 of the Hotel Greeters and auxiliary and guests enjoyed a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel on October 28, 1936. Well-known hotel managers A.C.C. Gamer, L.L. Informal portrait of John Paul Bennett, Director of the Conservatory of Music, College of Puget Sound. Mr. Bennett was the first of several guest writers for the Tacoma Times newspaper who would review musical events occuring in Tacoma. His column, which appeared in the October 30, 1936, Times lauded the appearance of the Don Cossacks Russian Male Chorus, led by Serge Jaroff, who performed at the First Baptist Church on October 29th, under the auspices of the Ladies Musical Club Artist series. Pictures taken at the Hollywood Jungle Party, ordered by Mrs. C. Quevli Jr. The two seated women are Marie Louise Quevli and Mrs. Brewster Morgan, the former Mina Quevli. Mrs. Morgan was born in 1909 in England while her father was studying in Europe. She was an artist and exhibited her oil paintings in Seattle in 1934. Marie Louise was a singer and actress and lived in New York City.

Gig Harbor grocery store at 3409 Harborview Dr., Gig Harbor, as photographed in November of 1936. The Stanich Grocery, a Red & White Store, is on the right side of the two-lane road. Martin and Katherine (Kathie) Stanich were early Yugoslav settlers in Gig Harbor. Mr. Stanich was a retired fisherman who had sailed the northwest waters for 52 years. The Stanichs were natives of Austria who had lived in Gig Harbor since 1909. Martin Stanich would pass away at age 90 in September of 1950 and his wife, Katherine, in January of 1964 at age 86. George A. Rogers, 92, signed his name in the voter registration book using a quill pen on November 3, 1936. Mr. Rogers cast his first vote in 1864 when he voted for Abraham Lincoln. He always voted Republican, and after registering, he voted for Alfred Landon for President. (T. Times 11-03-1936 p.1)

92-year-old George A. Rogers grips a quill pen as he signed his name in the voter registration book on November 3, 1936. He first voted back in 1864, 72 years before, when he cast his ballot for Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Rogers not only voted for Lincoln but also fought for him; he enlisted at the last call of the Civil War president for 300,000 men to join the Union Army. He came to Tacoma in the early 1900's and now resides at the Park Hotel. Mr. Rogers voted at the downtown fire station and was able to read the ballot without use of glasses. This life-long Republican voted for Alfred Landon for President in the 1936 elections. (T.Times 11-3-36, p. 1)
