ca. 1937. Townsend Club meeting at the Eagles Hall. Capacity crowd of older citizens seated in meeting hall. The building's elaborate balcony is visible in the background. In 1933, Dr. Francis E. Townsend proposed a government sponsored old age pension plan for every American over 60. Seniors suffered greatly during the Depression with their savings wiped out and no employment available. Townsend Clubs popped up all over the country to support his Plan. Although never adopted in its entirety, it is the ancestor of today's Social Security. (T. Times).

Miss Norma McDermott of Odessa, WA poses with the Black Minorca cock owned by O. R. Winters of Dundee, OR. at the annual Tacoma Poultry Show which opened December 28, 1937. Mr. Winter's big black, Grand Champion the previous two years, was named the champion cock of the show. The poultry show ran from Tuesday through Saturday. On Saturday evening the traditional poultrymen's banquet, a home-cooked chicken dinner, was held at the Odd Fellows Hall at 6th and Fawcett. (T.Times, 12/31/1937, p. 14).

ca. 1937. Tacoma Swiss Society Wrestlers, circa 1937. 23 men photographed with trophy in center and Swiss Wrestling Association flags. When the Swiss Society was formed in 1889, there were about 200 Swiss living in and around Tacoma. The Society grew steadily and in 1913, Swiss Hall was built. Affiliate organizations formed like the Swiss Singing Society Edelweiss, the Swiss Ladies Society, 1908; Swiss Wrestling Club; Swiss Aid Society, 1924; and, the Swiss Drill Team, a youth group organized in 1937. ca. 1937. Portrait of Mrs. James W. Bryan Jr. standing in front of a cabinet in which there are several pieces of pottery, glassware, and silverware. She is wearing a dark, sheer dress with a large scalloped collar. Her hair is marcelled. Mrs. Bryan's picture ran on the society page of the Bremerton Sun on May 8, 1937, when she was co-hostessing one of the annual Mother's Day luncheons planned by the chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization.) She belonged to the CG chapter. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. ca. 1937. The puppies of Ed Griffin's champion English Mastiff "Broomcourt Nell." In the beginning of September of 1936, there was only one mastiff in the Northwest. By Sept. 9, 1936, there were 11 with the addition of 10 puppies. The father was Roxbury Boy. Seven of the pups were female and 3 were male.
