Scope and content
ca. 1937. Townsend Club meeting at the Eagles Hall. Capacity crowd of older citizens seated in meeting hall. The building's elaborate balcony is visible in the background. In 1933, Dr. Francis E. Townsend proposed a government sponsored old age pension plan for every American over 60. Seniors suffered greatly during the Depression with their savings wiped out and no employment available. Townsend Clubs popped up all over the country to support his Plan. Although never adopted in its entirety, it is the ancestor of today's Social Security. (T. Times).
