Manitou School group. A group portrait of one of the school classes at Manitou School. There are thirteen girls and sixteen boys.The School Board was faced with tough questions in 1911. How to provide for a school population that was increasing at the rate of nearly 1,000 new students per year? Voters approved a special levy on May 6, 1911, for several new elementary schools and a new high school. A portable was secured for the Manitou neighborhood and in September, Sara Cochrane began teaching the first three grades in the one-room building. May Day celebration. Queen Ardys Bredvold is seen with her attendants at Pacific Lutheran College. Ardys has been crowned queen of the May festival. Her coronation took place in the new gymnasium at the college. The young women in the front hold a long ribbon that formed the edges of the walkway the queen took to reach her throne on the dais.

Several groups at Stewart Junior High School, Mrs. Andres, Times. Stewart Junior High School held its eight annual May festival May 7, 1948. Queen Arlee Curtice is seated on a stool raised higher than the others who are seated on stools. The other young women are her posture duchesses. They are dressed in summer play clothes including pedal pushers, shorts, and blouses, some with midriffs exposed. Helen Andres was one of the directors of the May festival for 1948. Panhellenic Tea at Great Hall, Annie Wright, News Tribune, Mrs. Hosmer. The Tacoma Panhellenic honored graduating senior high school girls and their mothers at their annual tea on April 24, 1948, at the Great Hall at Annie Wright. The program consisted of talks by Miss Maxine Blake and Miss Jacquine Norback about college life from the student's view point. Lona Huseby played Chopin and Debussy on the piano. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. Children's program at Temple Theater, Tacoma Philharmonic Association, Mrs. Ross Wright. Children are coming off special runs of the Tacoma Transit Company buses to attend the Tacoma Philharmonic presentation of the Pacific Northwest Symphony at Temple Theater. The new residence hall for women at the College of Puget Sound, circa March of 1939. The brick structure was erected in 1938, the school's fiftieth anniversary year. It was opened during the second semester January 30, 1939 and dedicated February 15, 1939. On the ground floor were a service room and large activity room, the main floor contained the lounge, office, dining room and kitchen, and the second and third floors were sleeping rooms for 40 students. Stadium High School's 56th annual graduation exercises, held June 8th at the Armory for the Class of 1939. Students at the back of the photograph, audience in foreground. The graduating class totalled 653 students and the ceremony was estimated to be attended by over 2500 persons. The sign "Education for What?" states the theme of the four student commencement speakers. Betty Binns, Helen Phill, and Robert Elliott tied for valedictory honors, each completing 3 years of study with straight A's. Class president Maynard Miller joined them as a speaker. College of Puget Sound Advanced Journalism class gets a front line view of the world of newspaper publishing in the office of veteran publisher Sydney Albert Perkins on November 22, 1939. The students spent an hour interviewing Mr. Perkins on opportunities in the field of journalism and methods of story development. Standing, left to right, are Tacoma Times columnist E.T. Short, students Betty Thralls, Mary Mladinov, James Clymont, Carl Lindgren, Virginia Marinoff, Mr. Perkins (seated) and Betty Cleary. Seated left are William Melton, Eleanor Weaver, Clarice Ross and Helen Gassaman. One topic of conversation was the many autographed photos of Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and national political figures on the walls, a souvenir of Perkins' days in Washington, D.C. where he served as private secretary to Senator Mark Hanna. Mr. Perkins had probably the finest collection of signed photographs in the country, including portraits of the most prominent men of the nation over the past two decades. (T.
