R. Franklin Thompson, President of College of Puget Sound, is wearing a baseball mitt and standing on the C.P.S. baseball field. Thompson had a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), he had been the President at C.P.S. for many years. President Thompson liked to get involved in many of the College activities (Tamanawas, 1947).

R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

Two co-eds in small booth with sign "Spur Stamp Sale." Six students gathered around booth. Spurs were a service-oriented campus organization composed then of sophomore women. Puget Sound's chapter was the fifth formed nationally in 1925.

On September 30, 1941, before moving into the College of Puget Sound's new Student Union building, representatives of the campus sororities meet to draw lots for room assignments. Numbers were drawn from a box held by Barbara Tomlinson, the pictured small daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Warren Tomlinson. College of Puget Sound summer band camp group posed on the campus. For the first time, the music department of CPS would be offering a program combining music study with vacation and recreation. The camp would be open to high school students receiving a superior rating in solo and ensemble playing, who exhibit scholarship and good character. The students would live at the college and be given a private lesson each week as well as instruction in harmony and arranging. In addition, the group would perform several concerts throughout the summer. Sixty five students participated in the first month long camp. (T. College of Puget Sound President Edward H. Todd. From 1941 C.P.S. annual, Tamanawas. He stands in front of a stone engraving reading "College of Puget Sound. Dedicated to Learning, Good Government and Christian Religion." Dr. Todd served as president of the college for 29 years, from 1913 to 1942.

On November 8, 1940, the freshmen presented Booth Tarkington's comedy "The Travelers" before a student assembly. The cast included Art Sheets, Ruth Hanawalt, Roberta Humble, Ed Ercegovic, George Victor, Dorothea Federico, Bob Albertson, Gordon Soder, Everett Lowther, Patricia Hanson and Frank Hicks. It's that wacky time again, time for the 12th annual Freshman Stunt Night at the College of Puget Sound, presented under the supervision of the Department of Dramatic Art. History will never be the same after September 20, 1940 when the Freshmen take aim at George Washington, Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse, among others. Pictured left to right are Norma Gagliardi, Walter Ebbett, Aldo Benedetti (kneeling), Kay Copeland, Beverly Birdsall and Jack Miller. The four skits to be presented to students and the public are "George Washington's Life Story, Sort of Chopped Up by the Little Hatchet with which He Carved Out the United States," "Paris, This is It" (the love story of Helen, Paris and the Trojan Horse), a Baby Contest and "Spot Cash," the story of a fifty dollar bill as it changes hands.
