Several men with horses stand in front of an open barn at a public horse sale for Army buyers at the Western Washington Fairgrounds, Puyallup, on October 20, 1941. Around 100 men, women and children attended the sale, mostly local farmers and ranchers. The Army was offering $150-175 for 4-8 year old geldings that were 15-16 hands high, 975-1150 pounds and strong of limb and wind. Only two of the thirty five horses inspected met their requirements. Two beautiful horses stand very still for their photograph. The one on the left has a long white spot that runs from between the eyes to the mouth. The horse on the right has a white diamond just above and between its eyes. Ordered by Mrs. Wayne Keyes.

Baby chicks are kept warm under large heating units which can be raised or lowered by pulleys in a December 26, 1957, photograph. This may be a fairly large chicken farm since there are at least four heating units with many chickens peeking out from beneath, while others swallow feed or just roam. Two large Saint Bernards stand guard on the concrete porch close to a little girl and her big brother. Even the smaller dog is nearly as tall as the mittened child on her scooter and may virtually outweigh her. 1908/08. Mr. Young with bull "Conqueror" Price $120.00 . A young man in a white shirt, wearing a hat, stands next to a large black and white bull in this August of 1908 photograph.

Along with daffodils and April showers, children and their pets have been a sure sign of spring in the Puget Sound area for generations. Photographer Chapin Bowen captured young Bobby David with his beloved dog, "Rags," seated in front of the Rialto Theater in 1931. Bob and Rags attended Tacoma's pet parade, held April 9, 1931.

ca. 1907. As early as 1907, Commercial Truck Company was in business in Tacoma, filling the need for moving and storage. A young man posed with a wagon used for transport, pulled by two horses, in front of the concrete building at 2302-12 East E St. that the company took over in October of 1907. The reinforced concrete warehouse was two stories, 75 x 140 feet and provided fireproof storage. It was built at a cost of $30,000. The Commercial Truck Co. was a forerunner of Tacoma's Star Moving Co. of today. (photograph courtesy of Dan Powell)

Master of Foxhounds Earl Craig addresses the mounted members of the Woodbrook Hunt Club on the New Year's Day hunt held in 1953. The hunt club's pack of foxhounds surround Craig. Woodbrook is one of the few clubs in the country that maintains their own pack of hounds. The Woodbrook Hunt Club is still active, and they remain associated with the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America. They also still enjoy the sport of riding to hounds, but they do not hunt a live fox. They "drag hunt". The dogs follow a trail created by dragging a scent impregnated gunny sack along the ground. They use synthetic scent; the dogs follow a synthetic fox.

The photographer's notes for this image indicate that it is a photograph of "Aza Destiny." The black Arabian horse, Aza Destiny, was born in 1971, sired by Azraff ex Bint Bass Hisan. His progeny would later number over 60. On the lower part of this photograph is a signature, apparently "Johnny Johnston," perhaps the photographer. Photograph ordered by Glenn Ash, Spanaway.

ca. 1937. Three black bears at Point Defiance Park. Zoo keeper George R. Jones reaches into steel bar cage while four young people watch. Cage is outdoors in open area with fenced area on back slope. In April of 1937, the zoo had no grizzly bears after the death of "Juliet," long time zoo resident. Her partner "Romeo" died the winter before. The zoo was expected a delivery of a pair of grizzly cubs in May from Yellowstone.

ca. 1937. Three black bears at the Point Defiance Zoo appear just as curious about their four teenage visitors as the visitors are about the bears in this circa 1937 photograph. Zoo keeper George R. Jones seems to be reaching into the outdoor barred steel cage with a small item, perhaps food, in his hand.

The Tacoma Spaniel Club held their field trials for 1937 in the prairie lands west of the Northern Pacific car shops in South Tacoma on March 21st. The "prairie lands" were just south of the South Tacoma Swamp. "High class" cocker and springer spaniels, including Pepper the defending champion, a red male cocker owned by Robert Wadsworth (center), competed for the prize trophy.
