On May 1, 1939, as the orchestra played "Pomp and Circumstance," eighteen senior girls gowned in pastel formals advanced bearing ribbons to form an aisle from Old Main to the May Queen throne. Queen Vivian Lunde, preceded by the ladies of her court, marched in procession.

Library Building at Pacific Lutheran College, now Xavier Hall. Building designed by Tacoma Architect Emanuel J. Bresemann, firm of Heath, Gove and Bell, in 1937. The college broke ground on the building on May 1, 1937 and it was dedicated two years later. (T.Times, 5/2/1939, p. 4)

1939 Pacific Lutheran College May Day Queen, Vivian Lunde, makes her traditional procession from Old Main to her throne. She is attended by three young girls, Mary Olson, Barbara DeBerry and Constance Hanson in period gowns of pastel organdy. Queen Vivian I is wearing a gown of white net over taffeta with a full skirt. It is topped by a white lace jacket with pearl studded flowers. Her bouquet is made of pink roses and snap dragons. Pacific Lutheran College 1939 May Day festivities. Queen Vivian Lunde pictured on her throne surrounded by her court. Queen Vivian was a member of the graduating class of the Normal department of the college. The throne faced the entrance of the college. It was a traditional silver chair backed by a lattice of spring flowers with tall baskets of Dogwood, Apple blossoms, lilac and palms. Included in the Queen's court were High school attendants Barbara Xavier and Betty Jo Forster, Freshmen Anne Lassen and Lenore Rasmussen, Sophomores Carol Haavik and Caroline Hoff and Seniors Ruth Downton and Aagot Gerde. Pacific Lutheran College May Day festivities and dedication of new Library Building. Many people inspect library reading room. Ground was broken May 1, 1937 for the new library designed by E.J. Bresemann, of Heath, Gove and Bell, architects. With the construction of a new library in 1968, this building was remodeled and named Xavier Hall. (T. Times, 5/2/1939, p. 4)

ca. 1954. This large brick Tudor/Gothic structure is believed to be the library on the campus of Pacific Lutheran College in Parkland. Two students are perched reading on the low brick wall next to the front steps. Pacific Lutheran had undergone great expansion of both facilities and student enrollment in the late forties and early fifties.

College of Puget Sound Committee for dedication of new Women's Residence Hall listening to Adelphian Choral Society under direction of John Paul Bennett. Anderson Hall, built at a cost of $75,000 to house 40 women, was formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. First meal in new womens' residence hall, College of Puget Sound. Nine of 40 women to live in new quarters gather at table with Carolyn Schneider, housemother, and Dr. and Mrs. Edward Todd, college president. The new hall, named Anderson Hall, was built for $75,000. It would be formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. Names of students are listed in the Tacoma Times article dated February 2, 1939. (T. A group of unidentified former Vashon College students gathered on August 7, 1938 beside an unidentified wooden building for a school reunion photograph. The Burton Garage and Shell Station and a church steeple are in background. The community of Burton grew up around the college that was founded there in 1892. The school provided a co-educational, Christian environment for study, without all the distractions of city life. It closed in 1912 when the main building burned to the ground and it never reopened.

A large group of unidentified former students of Vashon College at Burton on Vashon Island gathered on August 7, 1938 for a school reunion in front of an unidentified wooden building. Vashon College was in operation 20 years from its opening in 1892 until a major fire closed the school in 1912. The coeducational, non sectarian boarding school grew from an initial enrollment of 78 to a top enrollment of 200 in 1904.

Burton is located on Vashon Island on the north end of Quartermaster Harbor in southwest King County. The community grew around the college that was founded in 1892. It was a coeducational, non sectarian preparatory school whose enrollment grew from 78 in 1892 to 200 in 1904. Unfortunately, the main building of Vashon College burned to the ground in 1912 with building and contents a total loss and a decision was made not to rebuild.

The college would be giving 87 degrees at its 50th graduation exercise. The college had stated earlier that pressing business conditions would make it hard for 1938 graduates to find steady employment. Those going into teaching would have the easiest time finding positions; chemistry majors would have the hardest. Surrounding her were Bill Wood (kneeling,) Dean John D. Regester, Lillian Hendrickson, Betty Worden and Mary Louise Erickson. The baseball tradition involves a member from each team placing their hands around the neck of the bat; the last to reach the top wins.
