In April of 1943 Dave Davies (far left) was the only member of this North End Industrial League bowling team not named Murphy. His teammates were (l to r) Earl, John, Howard (Pat) and Roy Murphy. Before WWII broke out there were two more Murphys on the team: Roy Murphy, Jr. and Bill Murphy, Howard's son. When the two younger Murphys joined the Navy, Dave Davies took their place. (T. The Cammaranos sponsored by the Cammarano Brothers bottling company took on the All-American Air Tecs from Wright Field, Ohio in January of 1945 at Lincoln H.S. in a benefit game to raise money for the dependents of air force casualties. The Air Tecs were hand picked by their coach from the best players in the Air Technical Service Command and included Dwight Eddlemann who had played on the Big Ten championship team of 1943 and 6 ft. 8 inch Cpl. John Mahnken from Georgetown University. The Air Tecs made easy work of the Tacoma team, beating the local boys 63 to 39. William and Philip Cammarano founded the Cammarano Brothers bottling company in 1934. They bottled and distributed a wide selection of soft drinks including Twang Root Beer, Double Cola, Mission Orange, Squirt, and Paradise Club Soda. (T. Times, 1/17/45, p. 11). TPL-8846

In September of 1942, five members of the Lincoln Abes varsity eleven pose in the the unfinished Lincoln Bowl prior to their opening prep grid game against Stadium High School. After the game on September 18th, the team was all smiles. They battled the Tigers to a scoreless tie, their first non loss in the annual game since 1931. Stadium High School football coach Johnny Heinrick had 60 boys turn out to fill 11 varsity positions in September of 1942. Coach Heinrick was optimistic, despite having lost all but 4 of his 1941 letterman to graduation and enlistment. His players in general would be a year younger and 7-8 pounds lighter than the previous year.The team would face their arch rival, the Lincoln Abes, in the September 18, 1942 "King's X" game, held this year at 3:30p.m. in the afternoon due to mandatory dim outs. Although they appear older then their apparent years, the girls in this photograph were identified in the May 18, 1945 Tacoma Times as the Midland Junior High School softball team. The Midland girlsl team had a perfect year in 1945. They went undefeated in interscholastic play, and were declared champions of the Pierce County Junior High School leagues. Tacoma Baseball Club. Arnold (Red) Fischer was the number one catcher during the initial fortnight of spring drills at the Tacoma Tigers camp in Bakersfield, California. With the return of Bill Sheets, Fisher was probably crowded out as the first-string receiver, but Manager Jim Brillheart hoped to utilize the youngster's power at the plate and develop him into a third baseman. Tacoma Baseball Club. Manager Jim Brillheart had put together the 1950 Tigers team with returning reinforcements: "Wimpy" Quinn as the number one first baseman, Dick Wenner as outfielder, catcher Bill Sheets and right-hander, Don Carter. Allenmore Golf Open party. Following the first day of play Oscar Eliason and Ken Tucker were tied for first place in the 17th Allenmore Open Golf Tournament. Jim Barner, a junior at Stadium High School, is currently the scoring leader for the Stadium Tigers' varsity team. Jim Barner was also involved in reserve basketball, varsity baseball, junior football, Spring activity manager, Big S and Bogey Hi-Y. Stadium was getting ready for a big Cross-State league basketball game against the Everett Seagulls, the game would be played at Stadium's gymnasium (T.N.T., 2/17/49, p. 28).

On August 29, 1948, the Tacoma Athletic Commission (TAC) drew crowds to their second annual water show in Commencement Bay near Old Tacoma. Spectators watched the water carnival from both the Old Town Dock and the decks of the Top of the Ocean. TAC offered a two hour water extravaganza featuring the water skiing talents of the Seattle Skiquatics Follies. Parked automobiles lined the railroad tracks, McCarver St. and Ruston Way in Old Tacoma on August 29, 1948 as people rolled into the area to view the second annual Tacoma Athletic Commission Water Show. The show took place Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm in Commencement Bay in front of the boat shaped Top of the Ocean restaurant and club. The Top housed the headquarters of the TAC. The show featured the skiing talents of the Seattle Skiquatic Follies. In the photograph, a man crosses the tracks holding the hands of two small children.

The second annual Tacoma Athletic Commission Water Carnival was held on August 29, 1948, in front of the TAC headquarters at the Top of the Ocean. Spectators filled both decks of the boat-shaped restaurant and the Old Town Dock to watch the water skiing exhibition put on by the Seattle Skiquatics Follies. More spectators are perched on a couple of boats tied up at the dock, including the "Georgia" (left) owned by fisherman Antone Mariani. College of Puget Sound. 33 members of the 1948 College of Puget Sound Loggers football team left for San Jose, California with Head Coach John Heinrick (second row, far right) on the morning of September 30, 1948. They had already worked out on campus in preparation for the battle against the San Jose State Spartans on October 1st. The team and coach were met in California by several ex-Loggers including Al Ruffo, the Mayor of San Jose. (T.Times, 10/1/1948, p.10)
