Garrett Freightlines sign. An enormous "G" stands on top of a Garrett Freightlines sign on company property in July, 1965. A view of Mount Rainier is framed between the sign poles. Garrett Freightlines was listed in the 1965 City Directory as being in the transportation business; it was located on Port of Tacoma Rd. It was a family-run business with C.A. Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Construction has been completed on the new Tacoma Country & Golf Club in August, 1965. Built on two levels, the new (third) clubhouse replaced a 50-year-old structure. Coincidentally, both the original clubhouse and its replacement, known as the "Grand Old Lady," were destroyed by fires. The Tacoma Country & Golf Club, on the shores of American Lake, is the oldest continuing country club west of the Mississippi. Photograph ordered by the Weyerhaeuser Co.

Exterior of fire station #9. Fire Station #9 moved from its longtime location on No. Pine St. to 3502 Sixth Ave. in 1965. The modern one-story was a three bay frame designed by architects James Harris and William R. Reed. Emerging from one of the bays is the battalion chief's car; two fire engines are also side-by-side. The fire station would be dedicated on June 24, 1965. It was built with 1963 bond issue funds. McKinley Park Christian Church. Located near E. 40th & Spokane St., the McKinley Park Christian Church had been a presence in the neighborhood for nearly fifty years. The brick-and-wooden church was topped with a white steeple. It had a slanted ramp for those unable to walk up the small stairs. According to the 1965 City Directory, the Rev. Marvel D. A solitary man appears to be enjoying the peacefulness of the rippling stream and quiet majesty of the towering trees in the Lewiston, Idaho, area on July 13, 1965. Buck's A&W Drive-In celebrated its grand opening Thursday through Saturday, November 4-6, 1965, by offering root beer and soft cones for only 5-cents and hot dogs for a dime. Owned by Robert Gehring, Buck's was located at 5805 Sixth Avenue, between Orchard and Pearl. The last listing for Buck's in Tacoma's City Directory was in 1982. (TNT 11-3-65, A-7)

J.C. Penney's had a gas station and auto center located right next to their new store at the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center in 1965. A 1960 Chevy El Camino truck and a 1965 Ford Mustang are ready to be serviced at the outdoor pumps. Customers and attendants were protected from Northwest weather by the auto center's extended roofline. The auto center and the main store opened on October 13, 1965. Lysle G. Log stacker in action at St. Regis dry-land log-sorting and storage yard, November, 1965. 1965 saw the completion of several modernization projects for St. Regis Paper Co. A 15-acre log-sorting and storage yard was established on part of 35-acres newly created by the filling in of a saltwater log pond. Work continues on the expansion of the Port Industrial Waterway in 1966 as men and equipment are used to extend the waterway to Lincoln Ave., a major roadway in the Tacoma industrial Tideflats area. Water now covers the land area past the Lincoln Ave. railroad bridge due to dredging. The earth is being moved to make way for ocean-going ships. The Port of Tacoma saw major growth in 1965; 96 more ships loaded and unloaded cargo at the Port docks during the first nine months of 1965 than the same time in 1964. 1966 Richards stock footage. View from air on February 1, 1966, shows the new extension of the Port Industrial Waterway in the Tacoma Tideflats. The new cut would extend to Lincoln Ave. Working around-the-clock are General Construction Co. dredges to move the 6000-feet waterway inland. The earth was moved to make way for ocean-going ships. This aerial view of the Tacoma Industrial Airport (now the Tacoma Narrows Airport) on Point Fosdick, looking in a northerly direction, was taken in August of 1966, Gig Harbor is located beyond the right corner. On August 13th the airport sponsored a free air fair featuring: the Goodyear "Blimp", the Columbia; demonstrations of the TideAir "Hello Super Courier", which could take off and land within 100 feet; and a flyby by the new 141 "Starlifter" jet transport. According to an advertisement taken out by the airport and published in the News Tribune, air traffic had been increasing every month at the airport. In 1965, a total of 35,728 take-offs and landings were recorded by airline, military, and general aviation aircraft. (TNT ad, 8/12/1966 p. 12)

Example of intricately carved wood mural located at Cheney Art Woodcarving, 5625 So. Adams St., in February, 1966. The firm was owned by lumberman Ben Cheney. This piece appears to be set in Roman times where business is being transacted; vases and jugs are on display with a hovering salesman trying to seal the deal. He is pictured at his desk, phone on shoulder, while reading through paperwork. A metal Puget Sound National Bank coin bank is one of the items on his desk. Three wooden birds in flight decorate the walls of the small office. According to the 1966 City Directory, Mr. Roberts and wife Barbara lived at 1322 No. Jackson. June 4, 1966, aerial view of portion of Tacoma Tideflats featuring the Tidewater Oil Co. with Puget Sound Plywood plant in rear. Tidewater's winged "A" is clearly visible on one of the large storage tanks on the Tacoma plant's property. Located west of the Middle Waterway, the close proximity to water would make transport of oil products from its docks efficient. Oil could also be loaded onto trucks or by rail. The 1966 Cheney Studs basketball team posed for a group picture on March 9, 1966, at the Bellarmine gym. They would soon leave for Denver for their second consecutive appearance at the AAU basketball tournament as the Northwest representative. The team would lose to the top-seeded Armed Forces All Stars. The Studs finished their season with a 23-6 record. Jim Van Beek, #22, led the team in individual scoring for a 21.9 point average. Clint Names, #20, was the total Studs scoring champ at 587 points in 29 games. The Studs were led by player-coach George Grant. Susan Holmes sits regally in this June 2, 1966, studio portrait. Her floor length gown, resembling Elizabethan times, has a dark patterned underskirt. A multitude of large rings decorate her fingers and strands of pearls are draped over her upswept hairdo and around her ruffled neckline. Susan, a member of Stadium High School's Class of '66, was very active at the north end school. She was a member of Madrigals who performed medieval songs dressed in authentic costumes, Girls Club, Pep Club, Service Department Head, Honor Roll and Honor Society and Chorus. Superior Court judge William F. LeVeque, in official robes, offered Carolee, Dairy Princess Donna Starkel's Holstein, refreshments on June 21, 1966. Carolee was penned in a corral outside Superior courtrooms on the County-City Building's second floor lobby as a prime exhibit for June Dairy Month. The bovine was reportedly well-behaved and greeted her owner, Princess Donna, with a joyful - and - loud "moo-OO!" Princess Donna and her royal court served ice cream cones to visitors and planned to visit Puget Sound National Bank branches later in the week to promote ice-cold valley milk, ice cream and other dairy foods. This photograph of Margaret Farrugia, who sang professionally at Steve's Gay '90s under the name of Peggy O'Neil, was taken in May of 1966. Dressed in black from plumed hat to strapless dress with furred collar, she specialized in old blues and "torch songs," songs like "St. Louie Woman" and "Some of These Days." A mother of six, Mrs. Farrugia was the wife of an Air Force flight engineer stationed at McChord. She graduated from Lincoln High School and began performing at Steve's in 1963. " Peggy O'Neil" was part of the troupe that performed in the family-friendly "World of Burlesque" program which marked the 17th anniversary of Steve's. Photograph ordered by Steve's Gay '90s. "Ed," an employee of Precision Machine Works, observes the three drills of a piece of machinery at work on April 5, 1966. The area surrounding the machine is filled with shredded pieces of woodchip-like material. Precision Machine Works had moved to a new 11,000 square foot building at 2101 Pacific Ave. in September, 1965.
