ca. 1939. A caisson, which will form the base of either the west or east pier, being towed out by a tug. On top are two guy derricks. The huge structure was built of hollow concrete sheathed in wood. The bottom was finished with a steel cutting edge. The caisson rose about 50 feet out of the water and the flat top surfaced measured 60 by 120 feet. The caisson became the bottom section of the finished underwater pier as the process of "sinking the piers" was completed; its cutting edge digging into the silt at the bottom of the Sound. The pier was built section by section on top of the original caisson, that sank further into the water with each addition. The derricks were designed to lift each other to the next level as the pier sank. TPL-1576 ("Bridging the Narrows" by Joe Gotchy)
