Fresh air, comradery, canoes, camp songs and s'mores- it's summer and time for Girl Scout Camp! Tacoma Girl Scouts learn boating in July of 1938 at Camp St. Albans on the shore of Lake Devereaux near Allyn. Seven Girl Scouts pose in a row boat with paddles held in an upright position. The 23rd Annual convention of the Northwest Loyal Order of Moose was held in Tacoma in July of 1938. Over 2500 members of 32 lodges from all parts of the Northwest, covering Alaska to the California border and east to Montana, descended on the Winthrop Hotel, convention headquarters. Over 1000 participated in the parade held on July 22nd, from its formation at 7th & Pacific to its conclusion at the Winthrop. Here women in white uniforms are pictured marching down a Tacoma street. Herds of Moose have descended on Tacoma for their 23rd Annual Northwest Moose Association Convention. One of the highlights of the three day affair is the Loyal Order of Moose Convention Parade. Photograph shows men in uniform marching in front of Safeway's Bay City Market and Hotel Ridpath on Pacific Avenue. All local bands, drum corps and drill teams were invited to join at the parade's formation at 7th & Pacific. Over 1000 responded and marched in the parade. (T. Shriners gather in Tacoma to board the special train to the Golden Jubilee 1938 Imperial Council Session to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9. A farm wagon carries eight men. Several other men wait for an opportunity to ride in the wagon which displays a sign "New Deal." Parades, events, stunts and hijinks will be an important part of the convention.

The unidentified young women in this photograph from June, 1938 are probably the drill team from the Knute Rockne Lodge, Daughters of Norway. Over 1,000 members of the Sons of Norway and the Daughters of Norway, representing lodges in Washington, Oregon,California, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia, attended the four day convention in Tacoma from June 23 - 28. The drill team members, and their little "mascot," are attired in jodhpurs and holding what appear to be polo mallets. The male team leader in the center is wearing a United States Marines uniform. Hatasu Dancers, June of 1938. Large group of women in hall, attired in matching costumes. The Hatasu Temple was a group name used by Daughters of the Nile. Queen Hatasu was an Egyptian monarch. The Daughters of the Nile are the female offshoot of the Shriners, or Masons. The group was founded in 1913 in Seattle. The Hatasu #1 Temple still meets in Seattle. The annual session of the Supreme Temple of the Daughters of the Nile was held in Tacoma June 6-10, 1938. It was the first convention of this group to be held in Tacoma since 1925. Over 1,000 members of the Sons of Norway and the Daughters of Norway, representing lodges in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia, attended the four day convention in Tacoma from June 23 - 28, 1938. These sixteen men in uniform with their leader were probably a visiting chorus. Group performances were part of the activities of the four day convention held in Tacoma. This particular group is attired in jaunty nautical costumes with brass buttons, bow ties and service bars, or stripes, on their sleeves.

In June of 1938, the Shriners descend on Tacoma before leaving for their Afifi Shrine Golden Jubilee,1888-1938, in Los Angeles. Shriners from Southwest and Central Washington, as well as Yakima, Wenatchee and Grays Harbor have gathered in Tacoma to board a special 16 car train to LA. The Shriners parade heads north on the 900 block of Broadway over streetcar tracks embedded in the pavement. The trolley car appears to be operating during the parade. (T. Times 6/3/1938, pg. 2)

Tacoma is treated to a parade on May 6, 1938 when Knights Templar from all over the state gathered here for the 51st Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Washington. Sam Perkins, seated on the right, and three other men pose for a portrait to celebrate Perkin's 73rd birthday. The event was held at the Tacoma Club in the Washington Building. Mr. Perkins had a long and varied work history in Tacoma. Sam Perkins and W.P. Bonney were partners in a wholesale and retail drug business in the late 1880s- 1890s. They went out of business in the depression of the early 90's when customers dried up. Mr. Perkins became the secretary of Mark Hanna, chairman of the Republican election committee for William McKinley. After the election, Perkins stayed on with Hanna for a while. Mr. Perkins returned to Tacoma in the late 90's as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. His party at the Tacoma Club was attended by over 100 of his friends and business associates. (T. Dinner at Tacoma Club for 73rd birthday of Sydney Albert "Sam" Perkins, local tycoon and former newspaper editor. The dinner was attended by over 100 of Mr. Perkins's friends and business associates. During his 50 years in Tacoma, he had served as the partner of W.P. Bonney in a wholesale and retail drug business, in Washington D.C. as the secretary of Mark Hanna and as owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News.
