Western Boat Building Company has just completed and launched the "Mary E. Petrich", the largest tuna clipper ever built. The new vessel is 149-1/2 feet long, has a 34 foot beam, 1,600 horsepower submarine type diesel engine, and cost about $500,000 to build. The color guard of the 4th Infantry Regimental Combat Team led one of the five battalions of soldiers who marched down Tacoma's streets on February 22,1949. The hour-and-a-half Washington's Birthday parade, which is passing the 900 block of Pacific Avenue, was staged in observance of National Security Week under sponsorship of the Reserve Officers Association. A total of 4,000 troops participated in the parade. Old City Hall, 625 Commerce Street, with its tall bell tower can be seen in the distance. (T.Times, 2/23/1949, p.1)

Daffodil Queen and Princesses, Times, Sandy. Marcia Keefe, 16-year-old junior from Lincoln High School, was chosen to be one of the two princesses of the Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival for 1949. She is pictured above, carrying a large bouquet of daffodils, with the other 22 Lincoln contestants whose names are listed in a News Tribune article dated February 13, 1949. Marcia, the daughter of the R.E. Keefes of 1676 So. 40th St., saw nursing in her future after completing her education. Mary Jean Gropper of Puyallup was selected as queen of the festival. Dorothy Louise Hopping, daughter of William and Dorothy Hopping, was marrying Alan Roberts; the marriage ceremony and reception were being held at her parent's home. Dorothy is wearing a three-quarter length white silk gown with a v-neckline, she will be carrying an heirloom rosepoint lace handkerchief; her bouquet is made up of red anthurium lilies. William Hopping Sr. was co-owner of William D. Hopping and Company, an insurance company; he was also President of the Tacoma Savings and Loan Association. William and Dorothy Hopping lived in Tacoma's North end, at 3421 North 30th Street (T. Times, 2/6/49, p. 19).

Lincoln High School's Junior-Senior prom was held in the school's gymnasium on January 21, 1949 with Keith Rader and John Hreha as the event's chairmen. The theme for the evening was "Top Hat Twirl" and the gym was decorated with a top hat, cane, white gloves and a New York City skyline. A local orchestra played for the students. Rosemary Hablas-Blair Wedding. Rosemary Antoinette Hablas and Vernon Sidney Blair were married in November 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church. They stand together at the altar. Flowers and candles decorate the church behind them. The bride wears a long, white,slipper-satin dress with a court-length train and a finger tip veil. She is holding a bouquet. The groom is wearing a dark suit and boutonniere.

Social dancing was just one of the many activities offered at the Tacoma Council of Churches Youth Center, 821-23 Pacific Avenue, in November of 1948. Founded in July of 1946, by 1948 the center had become a popular spot for young people in Tacoma to socialize. It was especially popular with the young servicemen who were brought to Tacoma from all over the United States by the peacetime draft. Reverend Irvin N. Morris took over as supervisor and chaplain for the center in September of 1948. The center was open seven days a week and offered billiards, ping pong, bowling, a snack bar, and a music room with a dance floor.

Bride's portrait of Phyllis Lee Murphy. Phyllis Lee Murphy and Robert Bernard Freeman were married September 11, 1948, at the First Baptist Church. Reverend Walter O. Macoskey performed the services. Phyllis carried her paternal grandmother's handkerchief and wore the engagement ring of gold-set moonstones belonging to her maternal grandmother. Her gown was of white moire with a petal shaped collar and cuffs, both trimed in seed pearls and bugle beads. The full skirt swept into a train. Her veil was edged in lace, cascading from a petaled headpiece. She carried a bouquet of white rosebuds and stephanotis circled with pink rosebuds. Candles and flowers stand to either side of her.
