Drawing upon the 14th Psalm and the Book of Revelations, Dr. Walter A Maier of the Lutheran Hour radio program addressed a capacity audience in the Tacoma Ice Palace, 3801 South Union Avenue, on May 21, 1948. The main theme of his address was "Christ, Not Communism". Dr. Maier told his audience that Communism was "anti-Christ, anti-Bible, anti-church ... and anti-everything that is God or good" and warned that a Third World War would "give the Reds the rule of the world". Tacoma's Monday Civic Club was planting the first seedling trees at Franklin Park near So. 12th St. and So. Puget Sound. The trees would be known as "The Monday Civic Club Memory Grove", the trees were a gift from the Washington State Forestry Department. Over 100 members of the Civic Club were participating in the ceremonies, which would begin with a luncheon at the New Yorker Cafe. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Nicholson Bogue stand at the altar facing towards the back of the Asbury Methodist Church. They were married June 7, 1948, with Reverend Harry L. Allen officiating in the presence of 250 guests. Arnold wears a double-breasted tuxedo with black bow-tie. His new bride, the former Ella Louise Kipper, wears a formal wedding gown in the colonial style of heavy irovy satin with illusion yoke and train embellished with lace Bertha. Ella's veil is also edged with the same lace and it flows from a beaded tiara. Her bouquet of Ophelia roses and stephanotis has many ribbons cascading from it. Buness-Payne Wedding. 300-400 guests were present at the double ring ceremony uniting Evelyn Lorraine Buness and Clinton Dwight Payne on June 18, 1948. The evening nuptials were held at Bethesda Baptist Church and officiated by the Rev. Marion Flint. Louise Buness, the bride's sister, was her maid-of-honor and the groom's brother, Bud, was his best man. The bride wore a floor-length ivory satin gown with beadwork on the front. Her bouquet had a large orchid and stephanotis. Evelyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Buness and Clinton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Payne. The couple both attended Lincoln High School. After their wedding trip to California and (New) Mexico, they planned to make their home at 7048 South Fawcett in Tacoma. Clare Bowe is a music student at College of Puget Sound, she will compete against 23 other women for the Miss Washington Title. Bowe will travel via train, to Ephrata, Washington for the competition. Ground breaking ceremony for the Temple Baptist Church, 245 Saint Helens Ave., in July of 1948. Architect Silas E. Nelsen designed the long anticipated building, located at South 4th & Saint Helens, which was completed in 1949. Temple Baptist had been planning for this occasion for more than fourteen years. Mickelina Retha Spadafore and Bertram Edward Corkill were married at the First Methodist Church (located on 423 South K Street) in evening ceremonies on July 31, 1948. Reverend M. A. Marcy officiated. The bride is the daughter of Josephine Jaconetty of Dutton, Montana and the groom is the son of Ida Corkill of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She is wearing a beautiful gown of white satin with marquisette yoke, pointed long sleeves and a lace enhanced veil. The pearls around her neck were a gift from her bridegroom. Her bouquet was composed of orchids, gardenias and stephanotis. Mr. and Mrs. Corkill are pictured above in the act of cutting the three-tier wedding cake at the 100-guest reception held at Normanna Hall. Mickelina is a graduate of Lincoln High School and Bertram graduated from Vancouver Tech in British Columbia and attended the University of British Columbia. The Tacoma Times on their front page reported on the wedding of James H. Louie and Virginia Lew Wing who were married by Rev. Walter Macoskey on August 5, 1948 at First Baptist Church in front of 125 guests. This was the first wedding ceremony officiated for a Chinese-American couple at First Baptist Church. Virginia had been a member of the church since childhood. James is a graduate of University of Washington and received his masters degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Virginia graduated from Stadium High School and is a graduate of St. Joseph Hospital, School of Nursing. Chaplain Howard Rusthoi of Los Angeles, California brought his United Full Gospel City-Wide Revival to Tacoma for two weeks in August of 1948. His giant tent cathedral was set up at South 14th and Trafton. Chaplain Rusthoi had served for twenty years in the ministry including 28 months with the U.S. Army Air Corps. His services were broadcast nightly on KTBI radio. His revival had the local help and support of eleven churches and their pastors. Appearing with Chaplain Rusthoi were Joseph Waugh, a scotch tenor, and Fred Henry, who with billed as the "Blind Pianist". (T. Times, 8/7/48, p. 3).

Marian Andahl - Arnold Slater wedding. Marian Josephine Andahl and Arnold Clyde Slater were married in front of 400 guests on August 14, 1948. These are believed to be the bride's attendants at the altar of Our Savior's Lutheran Church featuring the maid of honor, four bridesmaids, flower girl and candlelighters. Maid of honor Grace Cuthbert wore a gown of pale blue taffeta and carried delphiniums in crescent shape. Bridesmaids Edna Andahl, Pat Johnson, Lois Buck and Louise Sylstad were in dusty rose taffeta gowns and carried bouquets of rubrum lilies. Candlelighters, in yellow taffeta, were Delores Burns and Mrs. Andres Holt, Jr. Dressed in blue taffeta was Linda Peterson, flower girl. Marian Slater was a graduate of Stadium High School while her new husband Arnold graduated from Lincoln High School and was a Washington State College student at the time of their wedding. Father McGreil performed the ceremony before 200 guests. Dorothy is shown wearing her wedding gown of ivory satin with a round neckline and tight girdle of crystal beads and pearls.
