1970 Daffodil Festival Parade. Winner of the Grand Award for the second consecutive year, the St. Regis Paper Co.'s 1970 entry, "Nature's 3-Ring Circus," measured 65-feet in length and supported three large rings on three different levels. More than 130,000 daffodils were used to create the wonders of nature. Portraying vacationers and nature lovers were six St. Regis employees: Janet McAlister, Debra Weinhart, Kay Koth, LaRue Rasmussen, Marina Nason and Kathy Turbyfill. (TNT 4-11-70, p. 1 - article)

1970 Daffodil Parade. Led by drum major Chuck Whitman, the black-and-gold clad 100-member marching band from Puyallup High School takes a bow before the rows of spectators lining the streets of downtown Tacoma for the 37th annual Daffodil Festival Parade. Each side of Pacific Avenue gets its own section of musicians bowing. Following the band are the Vikettes drill team in purple and gold. The April 11, 1970, parade attracted crowds of over 100,000 during its three city tour; the Puyallup High School band was one of 23 bands participating and the Vikettes, one of 18 drill teams. Beautiful sunny weather for the second year in a row helped to make the parade one of the most heavily attended in parade history. (TNT 4-11-79 - article)

1970 Daffodil Festival Parade. The brightness of the Yakima Sunfair Time float was visible blocks away due to its golden sunflowers and big orange globe. Had the parade occurred on a dreary day, the float's vibrant colors would have chased any errant rainclouds. Even under blue skies, the orange and yellows were a striking contrast to the gray roadway. The Yakima Sunfair float topped the "other festivals" list. Aboard the float were Miss Yakima Jenece McClain and princesses Luanne Herzig and Linda Edeler. (TNT 4-12-70, B-2, B-3)

1970 Daffodil Festival Parade. Hoping to excite the throngs gathered to view the 1970 Daffodil Parade as it passes by the bus depot on Pacific Avenue, some members of the 40-piece Woodrow Wilson High School drill team raise their arms in a cheer and salute. Led by captain Sharon Tinsman, the colorfully dressed girls are preceding the school's 82-piece band. No rain clouds threatened the enjoyment of the parade that year as brilliant sunshine was present throughout the parade's three city tour.

In April of 1970, a group of students from Stadium High School prepared to plant trees on Pacific Ave. between 7th & 9th Sts. as part of a beautification project. This project was in connection with the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. The trees were part of a grant given to the students by the Metropolitan Development Council. The girl in the picture has been identified as Madelyn McKenna, who also organized 90 speakers on Earth Day topics at the school, including Senator Henry M. Jackson. Earth Day, originated by Senator Gaylord Nelson at a conference in Seattle, brought together a grassroots movement 20 million strong demanding that protecting the environment become a national priority. Bank of Washington Plaza dedication. Cameras flashed and the crowd peered in as Governor Dan Evans (center in dark suit) and Tacoma Mayor Gordon Johnston (in brown suit) jointly officiated in the formal dedication of the Bank of Washington Plaza on January 9, 1971. The 24-story building was the first major highrise constructed in downtown Tacoma in 40 years. Nearly 400 employees of the merged staff of National Bank of Washington and Pacific National Bank (now called Pacific National Bank of Washington) had already moved into the tower in mid-December. Launching. If you think this fishing boat looks larger than normal, you are correct. This is the "Apollo;" at 258-feet long with a 44-foot beam, it was the world's largest tuna clipper in 1970. The $3,000,000 boat was under construction at Tacoma Boatbuilding for one year. Tacoma Boatbuilding had built 12 out of the 25 tuna boats built locally in the last eight years. The "Apollo" was launched on Saturday, October 24, 1970, at Tacoma Boatbuilding's Hylebos plant. She was the largest boat built by the firm and would remain in Tacoma until December of 1970 for final outfitting and acceptance trials. Photograph ordered by Tacoma Boatbuilding Co. Launching. A beaming Mrs. Manuel Cintas, wife of one of the newly launched "Apollo" owners, poses with the traditional spray of beribboned red roses on October 24, 1970. She was the ship's sponsor and had the honor of christening the tuna clipper before the vessel slipped stern-first into the Hylebos Waterway. The "Apollo," built by Tacoma Boatbuilding, was the world's largest tuna boat in 1970. It took a year to construct the 258-foot vessel. The "Apollo" had a capacity of 2000 tons of frozen tuna, 600 tons more than her largest competitor. The "Charley the Tuna" cartoon sign on the viewing stand was there as an advertisement for Star-Kist, whose Puerto Rican cannery would accept the frozen tuna. Launching. The tuna clipper, "Aquarius," was launched in official ceremonies on Saturday, December 5, 1970, at Martinac Shipbuilding facilities. The above photograph, with decorative bunting, was taken before she slipped down the ways into the City (now Thea Foss) Waterway. The 184-foot tuna seiner was owned by brothers Joseph and Richard Madruga of San Diego. They operated a tuna fleet for Van Camp Sea Foods. Sponsor at launching. The 184-foot fishing vessel, "Aquarius," was launched on December 5, 1970. She was built by Martinac Shipbuilding who had built the "Conquest" for the couple to the left, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Madruga, two years before. The other couple in the photograph is believed to be the Richard Madrugas, co-owners of the tuna seiner. The Madruga brothers operated a tuna fleet for Van Camp Sea Foods. The children of Mr. and Mrs. David Konsmo, 6-year old David Jr., 8 year old Dale, and 7 year old Dawn, sit in the A-shaped doorway of a vacation cabin on February 1, 1971. A similar cabin will be on display in front of the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse during the 1971 Tacoma Home Show running from March 30th through April 4th. This annual event, brought to Tacoma by promoter Patrick O'Toole, showcased the latest trends in home construction and furnishings. Launching. The 225-foot tuna seiner, "A.K. Strom," was launched at 8:30 a.m. on March 20, 1971, at Tacoma Boatbuilding facilities with Mrs. Floyd Burgi as the ship's sponsor. The ship is named after Tacoma Boatbuilding founder Arne K. Strom and was the first vessel named for the Strom family. Built at a total cost of over $2,000,000, she was the first of four identical boats expected to be completed this year by the shipyard. The "A.K. Strom" was capable of carying 1,425 tons of frozen tuna. After extensive ship trials, the seiner arrived in San Diego over Memorial Day weekend. Captained by David Rico and a crew of 16, she would fish for Star-Kist Foods, Inc. while based in Puerto Rico. Photograph ordered by Tacoma Boatbuilding. On February 8, 1971, approximately 30 retired barbers assembled at the Tacoma Labor Temple, 1355 Market St. Seven women along with one man posed for a photograph on that day; the women may have been involved in the barbering business themselves or simply have accompanied their husbands to the gathering. Launching. The sampan, "Anela," slides gracefully down the ways at Martinolich Shipbuilding on October 18, 1971. The 100 x 25-footer, a modern steel version of the traditional Hawaiian sampan fishing boat, would be used for tuna fishing by Jack Shinsato's Angel Fishing Co., Ltd. "Anela" is the Hawaiian version of Angel. This unique ship was the first ever of its kind built of steel. Instead of standard fishing racks, the "Anela" featured a low stern platform and side guards wide enough for men to stand on and handle nets. Her keel was specifically designed to protect the rudder and single screw from coral reef damage. The "Anela" was able to hold up to 100-tons of tuna in eight seawater-circulating fish wells. Launching. The tuna seiner, "Denise Marie," was successfully launched at Tacoma Boatbuilding facilities on June 5, 1971. She was the second of four steel 225-foot seiners built by the firm; the first was named after the company founder, A.K. Strom. A large crowd of shipbuilders, their families, and Navy officials numbering 300 and more attended the christening of the 100-ton prototype craft, the "SES-100A," on Saturday, July 24, 1971 at the Tacoma Boatbuilding facilities, 1840 Marine View Drive N.E. The surface effect ship (SES) could travel at twice the speed of then-current destroyers. Senator Warren G. Magnuson was the primary speaker at the event; he stated that the SES was "the first step in the evolution of multi-thousand-ton high speed ships of the future." Launching. The 225-foot steel tuna seiner, "Eileen M," slipped down the ways at Tacoma Boatbuilding facilities on the Hylebos on the evening of August 21, 1971. She was the third of the "Strom" class of giant tuna boats to be launched. Mrs. Fred McDonell, wife of the ship's captain, performed the sponsor's duties of christening the ship. The "Eileen M" had a frozen fish capacity of 1,425 tons in 22 wells and contained deluxe quarters for a crew of 16 in her aluminum deckhouse. Final delivery to her owners was expected to be in early October of 1971 after conclusion of sea trials. The "Eileen M" would be used for fishing in Puerto Rican waters. Launching party. The "Anela," a 100 x 25-foot steel tuna fishing sampan was launched at Martinolich Shipbuilding facilities on the Blair (formerly Port Industrial) Waterway at high tide in the early morning hours of October 18, 1971. Posed before the ship is the official launching party, including Martinolich president, Anthony Martinolich. Miss Rosemary Shinsato, daughter of owner Jack Shinsato, was the ship's sponsor; she was assisted by her mother, Mrs. Masae Shinsato. Both women are holding large bouquets of long stemmed roses. "SES-100A" experimental craft. The 100-ton surface effect ship (SES) was christened on July 24, 1971, at Tacoma Boatbuilding Co.'s facility on the Hylebos. A joint project of Tacoma Boatbuilding and California's Aerojet-General Corporation, the ship rides on a cushion of air at speeds far surpassing the swiftest of destroyers. Propulsion is provided by high capacity waterjets driven by gas turbine engines adapted to marine use. Mrs. Warren G. Magnuson performed the sponsor's duty of christening the craft with the traditional bottle of champagne; her husband, senator from Washington, was the principal speaker. Side-and-rear view of the "SES-100A," a revolutionary 100-ton prototype craft produced in conjunction with Tacoma Boatbuilding Co., Aerojet-General Corporation of California, and the U.S. Navy. The ship was christened by Mrs. Warren G. Magnuson in ceremonies occurring on July 24, 1971, at Tacoma Boatbuilding facilities. According to the Christening Ceremony Program, the high-speed Surface Effect Ship (SES) was to be tested to provide data for design of multi-thousand ton SES of the future. It was built from several modern materials, principally of a welded aluminum alloy, so that it would have longevity at sea. Ship construction and outfitting was done by Tacoma Boatbuilding. The tuna seiner, 225-feet in length and the fourth in the Strom class of ships, was christened by Mrs. Peter Giacalone, wife of the ship's captain. The ship bears her name. Shortly after the 1971 Junior Daffodil Parade was completed on March 26th, twelve Daffodil princesses posed with an Arabian horse and costumed rider in the vicinity of the Tacoma Totem Pole, 9th & A St. The high school seniors are all wearing rain jackets to combat the chilly and windy weather conditions. 1971 Daffodil Parade. Chugging down Pacific Avenue on April 3, 1971, was the Gig Harbor entry to the 1971 Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival Parade. The vessel, festooned with bright yellow daffodils, had several young women dressed in wet weather gear waving to the large crowd. The artful use of daffodils won Gig Harbor the "Mayor's" trophy for best use of the flower. The theme of the 1971 parade was "Nature - Our Greatest Heritage." (TNT 4-3-71, p. 1 - article)
