An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

General Jonathan M. Wainwright was awarded an honorary degree of doctor of military science at the College of Puget Sound on November 20, 1945. R. Franklin Thompson (left), president of the college, made the presentation to General Wainwright. Edward H. Todd (right), president emeritus, pronounced the benediction at the ceremony. The College of Puget Sound Conservatory had just received opera scores and volumes of German lieder, from Frederick W. Wallace; and oratorio music from Martha M. Hughes in October of 1944. A reception tea was held at College of Puget Sound's Anderson Hall on July 31, 1948 to welcome Bishop Kennedy and his wife. More than 125 Methodist ministers from Washington, Oregon and Idaho attended the conference and reception. College of Puget Sound's Junior Varsity football team was coached by Don Dahlquist (first row, right). In college, Dahlquist had been a star tackle for Utah State. The Junior Varsity football team was made up of forty athletes, mostly freshmen. Their season ended with three wins and three defeats, their biggest wins were against the City Firemen, 24 to 0, and Fort Lewis All Stars, 21 to 0 (Names appear in 1948 Tamanawas).

Lynn Wentworth (center) was an Assistant Professor of Art at College of Puget Sound. Prof. Wentworth is helping a student, wearing a CPS student smock) with a vase, an unidentified woman stand to her left. Lynn Wentworth was the head of the art department and helped institute the art facilities expansion program at CPS, moving the department into the third floor attic of Jones Hall, which gave them more space.

Delta Alpha Gamma alumnae formed a committee to plan the annual Christmas tea. Over 200 alumnae and 50 active members of College of Puget Sound's sorority have been invited to attend. In December of 1947, the College of Puget Sound was selling canned milk on campus. The milk bought by students, faculty and staff would be sent to war ravaged Europe as a Christmas gift. At the milk stand, an unidentified student was selling milk to CPS President R. Franklin Thompson with other students waiting in line, cash in hand. CPS had also adopted an orphanage, De Bon-Secours, in Paris and they would be sending CARE gift packages worth $875 to the children for the holidays. (Tamanawas, 1948).

The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students.
