School, McIlvaigh Middle- 6

Back of photo: School district and Safe Streets officials stood by while the Washington National Guard used two bulldozers to clear a parcel of land in front of McIlvaigh Middle School on the East Side of Tacoma Sunday morning. The 118th Transportation Company of the 144th Battalion cleared the school district property that Shanta Wright of Safe Streets said had been an area of drug activity. Tacoma has been designated as one of about 50 cluster sites across the US. A program has been scheduled to welcome the Amerasian youth and their families, after lunch a boat cruise of Commencement Bay, courtesy of the Sea Explorers, a branch of the Boy Scouts of America.

According to church officials, Stalling's establishment of the Imani Temple is a major blow to Hickey, who earlier this year was accused of racism for closing three inner-city Catholic high schools. The move also puts Stallings on a collision course with the Roman Catholic Church.
