More than 150 boys were sworn in as School Patrol Officers, taking their oaths and joining the 600 other student officers in Tacoma. The Tacoma School District initiated the student safety program 20 years ago and since that time there have been about 10,000 patrol officers. It was hosted by the art honorary fraternity, Alpha Rho Tau (Greek letters for ART), in honor of the college's foreign students. On February 12, 1949, the art honorary fraternity of the College of Puget Sound, Alpha Rho Tau, threw their very first Beaux Arts Ball. The party was given in honor of the College's foreign students and drew students dressed in all sorts of lavish, exotic and creative costumes. A masked couple glided by in fanciful dress; she a column of black and white ruffles and he a rectangular knight. Other couples looked on from tables near a wall decorated with modern drawings. All of the revelers were unidentified with the exception of the woman directly left of the female dancer. She was Maxine Lister, the winner of the first prize for most original costume. In February of 1949, two groups of young hoop players known as Mead's Little Devils and the Tillicum Pee-Wee's posed for the Tacoma Times photographer in the Stadium High School Gym. The junior basketball teams were composed of boys all weighing 80 pounds or less. In the back row were Coaches Russ Meade and Art Spencer. This photograph taken on January 27, 1949 shows Jerry Meyers (3rd from the left) carefully performing his duties as a school patrol officer for McKinley School. The other students are (l to r) Bobby Booth, Donna Fay Lechner, Patricia May Johnston, Billy McDougal, Carroll Barret, and Randy Norton. The Tacoma schools patrol service received national recognition in 1949 for completing 20 years of service, through all kinds of weather, with not one fatality at any school. Sunnbonnett Girl operetta held at Lincoln High School, Stewart High School, Neal Wynn. The Tacoma Council of Parents and Teachers sponsored the operetta as a benefit for the March of Dimes. The cast included students from the College of Puget Sound, Lincoln High School and Stewart Junior High School. Between the acts Stadium High School students presented speciality numbers. The program was presented at Lincoln High School February 4th and 5th, 1949. (TNT, 2/2/1949, p.26)

This aerial view shows part of Lincoln High School (upper left) and the Lincoln Bowl as they appeared in August of 1948. Built by filling in much of Lincoln gulch, the athletic amphitheater, located northwest of the school, took over seven years to build. WWII stopped most work on the Bowl, and after the war funds for further construction were limited. The new stadium was finally dedicated on September 24, 1948. TPL-9471

Stadium High School first opened as Tacoma High School in 1906, in 1913 the name was changed to Stadium. The building was originally intended to be a hotel, but it was never finished, after a bond was passed by Tacoma voters, money was appropriated for the completion of a new school in Tacoma. College of Puget Sound had a ground breaking ceremony for their new building, the CPS Memorial Field House. The Memorial Field House will be dedicated to the 138 men from CPS who died in World War II. The Field House will be located on the south side of campus, it will have a steel reinforced concrete foundation, the building will be 200 feet by 168 feet and 36 feet from the floor to the overhead beams; it will accommodate more than 5,000 people. CPS. Marcello Mochi, center, was the Italian vice consul stationed in Seattle. He came to Tacoma to meet with the World Affairs Council October 5, 1948, at the College of Puget Sound. He told about the Italian struggle and some of the war-torn areas where he served during the Ethopian conflict and World War II. Shown with Mr. Mochi are Ray W.
