College students pile into an old jalopy on their way to the College of Puget Sound's first annual C.P.S. picnic. The topless automobile with spoke wheels is being cranked by one of the students. CPS students and faculty took the afternoon off April 28, 1938 to stage their first annual picnic on campus. Classes were dismissed at 2:30p.m. and were replaced with a tug-of-war, softball, volleyball, horseshoes, lunch, a community sing and dancing under the stars. (T. Times, 4/29/1938, p. 1)

The baseball tradition involves a member from each team placing their hands around the neck of the bat; the last to reach the top wins. Surrounding her were Bill Wood (kneeling,) Dean John D. Regester, Lillian Hendrickson, Betty Worden and Mary Louise Erickson. The Pacific Lutheran College 1938 May Day Queen Alice Cook and her court pose in front of a brick building at the school. The royalty, left to right, are unidentified, Doris Hovey, Aagot Gerden, Eugenia Spencer, Queen Alice, Enid Blake, Ruth Downton, Caroline Hoff and unidentified. The unidentified young women are probably the high school court members Barbara Xavier and Priscilla Preus. The children standing in front are, left to right, Marianna Van Rooy, Gail Taylor, Grover Akre and Connie Hanson. The court attendants wore pastel gowns of blue, peach, blue-green and green. Queen Alice wore white silk with grosgrain ribbon defining the skirt. Her bouquet was of lavender stock and spring flowers. The attendants carried carnations and sweet peas. (T. The building was constructed in 1927 as the college's science building and was designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. It was re-dedicated in 1932 and named in memory of the late Leonard Howarth.

Declining business conditions in 1938 would make it hard for some graduates to find steady employment immediately on graduation. The college would be giving 87 degrees at its 50th graduation exercise. The college had stated earlier that pressing business conditions would make it hard for 1938 graduates to find steady employment. Those going into teaching would have the easiest time finding positions; chemistry majors would have the hardest. An elderly group of former Vashon College students gather to reminisce on college days at Burton on Vashon Island. A woman jots down notes as two older women converse in front of a wooden structure with covered porch. Burton is located on Vashon Island on the north end of Quartermaster Harbor in southwest King County. The community grew around the college that was founded in 1892. It was a coeducational, non sectarian preparatory school whose enrollment grew from 78 in 1892 to 200 in 1904. Unfortunately, the main building of Vashon College burned to the ground in 1912 with building and contents a total loss and a decision was made not to rebuild.

A group of unidentified former Vashon College students gathered on August 7, 1938 beside an unidentified wooden building for a school reunion photograph. The Burton Garage and Shell Station and a church steeple are in background. The community of Burton grew up around the college that was founded there in 1892. The school provided a co-educational, Christian environment for study, without all the distractions of city life. It closed in 1912 when the main building burned to the ground and it never reopened.

First meal in new womens' residence hall, College of Puget Sound. Nine of 40 women to live in new quarters gather at table with Carolyn Schneider, housemother, and Dr. and Mrs. Edward Todd, college president. The new hall, named Anderson Hall, was built for $75,000. It would be formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. Names of students are listed in the Tacoma Times article dated February 2, 1939. (T. College of Puget Sound Committee for dedication of new Women's Residence Hall listening to Adelphian Choral Society under direction of John Paul Bennett. Anderson Hall, built at a cost of $75,000 to house 40 women, was formally dedicated on February 15, 1939. The new residence hall for women at the College of Puget Sound, circa March of 1939. The brick structure was erected in 1938, the school's fiftieth anniversary year. It was opened during the second semester January 30, 1939 and dedicated February 15, 1939. On the ground floor were a service room and large activity room, the main floor contained the lounge, office, dining room and kitchen, and the second and third floors were sleeping rooms for 40 students. Conductor Gunnar J. Malmin posed in March of 1939 in the center of Pacific Lutheran College's "Choir of the West." The group was in its final round of rehearsals before their concert at Central Lutheran Church.
